Location
San Antonio, Texas
I was visiting in South Texas last weekend and went down to the Rio Grande where the new border wall is under construction. These photos were taken about a mile west of the Progresso, TX POE. At this location the wall is built on top of the existing river levee.

The top is not complete and the steel posts have onion sacks covering the tops. I guess they don't want anyone to cut themselves.

This one shows the "south side" of the fence. The concrete base can be seen.

From this angle the narrow open space between the posts can be seen.

I see you didn't have to dodge too much heavy equipment during your visit? Work sites operating at that kind of break neck pace, are dangerous places! Be careful! Wear your hard hat...

Perhaps it is just me and I am being rude to whatever government agency is responsible for this project,

but have they never watched an old movie of the invaders scaling a wall of a castle? How long will it take for the illegals to put a ladder over the top or tunnel under this wall? It seems that this wall would slow down the migration into our country, but at what expense? It didn't work with the Berlin Wall and they had guards as well as the wall. Perhaps we need a different solution, but I can't think of anything that is civilized.

Opponents of building the wall always point out that it "...won't stop those who want to get over." True, it won't stop 100% of those trying to cross illegally but it sure slows them down, and channels them into narrower corridors where they are easier to apprehend. The wall is part of a solution to illegal border crossings. Of course, Washington politicians have never had any intention of finishing the wall much less stopping illegal crossings.

....maybe a wall around DC and let the inmates only pass laws that don't affect anyone else....

As I recall though Russia had a fairly effective wall system that just involved barbed wire and machine guns. I think that is the approach that the US should take with a 1 mile free fire zone on the border. That could be part of the National Service Program Obama has adopted.

If you listen to the opponents of the wall, particularly those who make money along the border, you'll find that they are against anything that might work. The more they whine about it, the more effective it probably will be. The mayors along the border generally just want more border patrolmen. Primarily, I think, because border patrolmen buy houses and spend money and do other things that generate taxes. At the same time, their primos from across the border can still sneak in past the guards anytime they want.

If they were serious, there would be a 200 yard wide "no mans land" with razorwire in place, and guarded by heavy machine guns in towers. You cross into that area, and you are toast. Make it very clear in several different langauges, and have the area clearly marked. After a few dozen get "detered", I think the problem would go away.

Sure hope this wall does not prevent us from crossing over to Progresso to eat a Aurtros!

Most of the local people I know don't go across any more - even to go to Arturo's. They told him that he should open a place on the US side.
