I've determined that I'll pick 3 pistols in addition to the one I already have. So I'm looking to you to help me.

I'll end up with 4 total. I already have a Buckmark with a bull barrel that I shoot and have won BE competitions with. I also plink with it.

I ordered the M&P Pro Core 9mm with the 5 inch barrel. This will be used for target and competition. Depending upon accuracy I may put the Apex barrel in it and maybe a trigger. I love accuracy!

I'm looking for recommendations for 2 more to round them out.

I've shot the 1911 Range officer and thought it to be a very nice gun.

NJ has no provision for any kind of carry, but someday I plan to get the hell out of NJ, it's a bitter pill to swallow. My family has been in Jersey for 300 years.

Thanks

You have a nice .22 target pistol.
You have, or will soon have, a nice 9mm in that C.O.R.E. Pro.

If it were me, and it was at one time, I'd add these two:
A quality 1911 with a 4 1/4" barrel. This can be used for carry and competition.
A revolver. S&W makes really nice revolvers as does Ruger. If you can find a Dan Wesson in .357Mag, that is one of the best and most accurate ever made.

I'm thinking you need a wheel gun. I nice model 686 plus with a 4" barrel. Fun to shoot and great stopping power. I have many friends from New Jersey. Great people!

Yep, a wheel gun. S&W K or N frame or Colt E/I frame in 2-4" barrel length would be my choice. in .357 Mag, that way you can shoot .38's as well. Its all personal preference, but the more I carry and shoot a revolver, the more I like and prefer them. H.

Your choice . Your the one that has to live with it .

More power to you if you can stop at 4. The two remaining pistols I would recommend to you to fill out the four are a 3" Model 13 and a full size 1911 style semi auto, either Springfield if you're budget minded or Sig Sauer if you're not. Of course, you also need a .22 revolver, a .380 semi auto, a large frame revolver, a compact 9 mm, etc., etc., etc . . .

Thanks!!!
I'm researching revolvers. What is the difference between k frame and L frames?

Wow, revolvers are more expensive then I thought they would be.

Why no 9mm revolvers from s&w in those frames?
I see ruger has a 9

9 vs 357?

My vote would be a FS 1911 and K frame 38/357 revolver, if staying with S&W. Ruger makes some nice firearms too (my FS 1911 is a Ruger SR1911). Depends on your intended use for them.

There is nothing like a ''J'' Frame 38 Special Snub Nose Revolver to spice things up a little. This is my Ruger LCR . I think everyone should own at least one wheel gun !

Purpose?

So it's really down to picking 2, but you don't say what you want to use them for. Home defense? Concealed carry (when you can)? Other Competition? Target practice?

Also, why wait to get out of NJ? I've been there; there are better places. Start a new 300-year family tradition in a free state.

S&W has the 986 and 929. Both are Performance Center guns so they aren't cheap. Unless you want more power for hunting, more recoil just for fun, or to be more traditional I would go with 9mm to minimize the number of calibers you need to stock.

Answering your question requires knowing your purpose and budget for the pistols. How about rifles?

Wow all great responses!!

I was thinking about standardizing on 9mm. Has the stopping power with the right loads, it's cheaper to shoot, ammo should be somewhat available when tshtf.

Good question on purpose for the 2 additional pistols. The CORE will be for me to get into competition. The other 2 to round things out.

I've shot the 1911 range officer, nice gun, shot it very well at BE targets when I rented it. What other 1911's compare to it? For price/performance? Again will probably want to stick to 9mm.

Revolver sounds interesting. I have never shot one. Think I'll rent one at some point.

Rifles I have; Ruger 10/22, Ruger 77/22 mag.,
Beeman .177 single shot competition air rifle.

In the Army I hawkeyed with the M16, so an AR15 is defiantly in my future. The m&p 15-22 I've been reading up on will probably pick up one, Then a real AR15 at some point. Should be sooner rather then later especially if Eve gets in the Whitehouse, (Bill stated that if she gets elected, he wants to be called Adam)

Thank you all!

9mm is rimless so it requires something called moon clips to keep then in the cylinder of a revolver where as 357 is a rimmed case and that rim is what keeps the ammo from falling out through the front. While the 9 maybe widely available 38 and 357 have been around almost as long and just as available and price isn't that far off from 9mm. 50 rounds of 38spl are about $12 - $13 a box and 357 is slightly more

I just got a 6 inch and 4 inch 686 plus. So much fun to shoot !

The M&P 9c might be a good option. It shoots like a dream and accept magazines from your full size M&P, but very concealable. I have the M&P 9 , m&p9c, and shield and love them all. I 2nd the 686 plus in 357 magnum as another alternative.

You have the target/plinking pistol covered and a modern semi-automatic on order. If it were me I would ad some variant of the M1911 just because it is the quintessential combat pistol. Then I would go completely opposite end of the spectrum and get a .45lc SAA revolver most likely a Colt 1873 Peacemaker clone. The Peacemaker is a famous piece of Americana known as "The gun that won the west."
