Pick an aiming system for me

Here are what I am considering, the gun will be used for target shooting with the kids(teens) mostly@ 25-50 yards. In the fall it will pull duty as a small game killer. It may also pull duty as a wood chuck killer in the field behind my house occasionally.

There are some pretty good choices in your price range other than NCstar. I will say this though, NCstar's customer service is top notch and they have a life time warranty on all there scopes.

I would be partial to the first one you posted, but I know a lot of folks around here seem to like the Prairie arms(I think thats what they all talk about) someone will chime in and talk about it. I think it is the PA M4 everyone likes.

I just picked up a Mueller 4.5-14 x 40 AO for only $100 at Dunham Sporting Goods.
I've always heard good things about Mueller scopes and have wanted to try one. It's clear and bright. If I decide to take it off the 15-22 I may drop it on the Anshutz. I have high powered scopes on all my .22's and use them for plinking and target shooting.
Granted it is a big scope compared to the holographic sight I had on it, but my 9 year old wasn't digging the halo. Gotta keep the kid happy.

I'd stay away from those reticle ones. You could get reticle dysfunction.
You'd have to take Viagra...........make you shoot harder.

If magnification is what you want, I would go with the "4x30 Illuminated Reticle Rubber Armored Tactical Scope", you can turn off the illumination if it's light out, crank it on in the evening. I guess just know that it is NOT a "Red Dot".

If you don't care about magnification and just want a good ol' Red Dot, go with the "4 Reticle Red Dot Sight".

I was looking at those NC Star sights and almost bit due to affordability, but sprung for $200 on this (well, the wife did for the 10th anniversary):

I freakin love it! Variable magnification, illuminated reticle (red dot style), high quality and looks cool - hope this helps!

I think you and your kids will have a ball with the 15-22 regardless if you pick the 4x or red dot... But for paper shooting and squirrels the 4x will probably be more useful, maybe.

Hello, Dave, I am curious as to why you are not considering a variable power scope (maybe for the wood-chucking?).

I have the NcStar 3-9x 42 compact tactical (rubberized) scope and for the same amount of $$$....

I have NO complaints about mine and enjoy the heck out of it!

I honestly cant see a reason for a 9 power scope on a 22....whats it's effective range to make reliable kills....70 yards tops?

Well, yes, very similar, only mine is the compact version, which is only about 7" long. Has the P-4 sniper reticle.

I haven't put the crosshairs on a living target, but currently I am shooting 2" groups at 100 yards. Reliable 70 yard kills? I cannot attest to that, but I wouldn't want to be on the receiving end at 100 yards either!

Whatever, I'm sure you will enjoy the selection you make....

Hey there, I know you said you have teens (which are expensive them selves,) but i found a site on here where they have some decent stuff. Clones,lasers,mounts that wont break the bank. Just look through the 3 pages and u might find something u will like.

Really? I don't have a .22 with less than 14 power on it now, most of mine have 18 to 24 power. Although if I could find a good price on an Unertl 10 power ( or Lyman or Fecker, heck I'm not fussy ) I'd love to put one on a target .22.

I guess it all depends on if you want to shoot plates and balloons or matchsticks and pennies on edge.

It is great fun to cut playing cards in half and shoot the primers out of shotgun shells (used of course! ), any general blasting away can be done with open sights or a pistol. That's in my humble opinion, and your mileage may vary...

I would go with the 3rd choice--the illuminated reticle--for the purposes you describe. A 4x30 is a versatile scope that will be enhanced by the illumination and should work well for you. Couple that with the low cost and great warranty and it sounds like a winner......
