You have to head for the hills (or a suitable remote area) and you're allowed one handgun. Pick it!

Don't read too much into this, just pick one handgun (you don't have to currently own your choice) and prepare to carry it for everything you'll need a handgun for.

My choice? My beloved 5 inch 27-2.

This gun is perfect in every way for almost everything I need a handgun for. Now, when I'm at work, I carry a Glock 34 that holds lots of bullets, but I'm more than happy with my 27.

I can hunt large and small game, defend myself, practice, and teach others to shoot, all with one handgun. Allow me to bring my Keith 358429 mould, some primers, and some powder, and I'm set for a long time.

I'd be hard pressed to find a handgun that does it all better than my dear, worn 27-2, I think.

My 629 Performace Center Light Hunter. With 44 Special loads and a 7.5 inch compensated barrel it is like shooting a .22 and a tack driver. Even with full house .44 mag it is amazingly tame too. It's great to shoot single or double action, the sights are great, and one can easily mount/dismount a scope quickly. It is a gun with a 7.5 inch barrel that handles like a 4 inch gun.

Skeeter Skelton wrote an article on this very question many years ago, before Glocks even existed. He settled on the 5" Model 27 and I would be hard pressed to argue with him. 'Cept I might argue for the 3 1/2" barrel for the slightly better portability.

My new Ruger Super Blackhawk. It shoots 9mm, 38SPL, and .357 Mag. All of the popular calibers that would be easy to find in a dicey situation.

If I got a second choice it would be my new M&P 45 Compact.

Mine would be my first revolver; a S&W Model 36-2, Chiefs Special. It is traditional, small, reliable and has served me well over the years.

I would pick a 1950 Model 44 Special in a Lawrence #7 holster. 5 inch barrel. Fixed sights. Had that set. Miss it. Believe it or not, got it from an old Sheriff who bought it new in 1953. Also came with a Patton holster.

I think Skeeter meant this:

You can't argue with your 27. Worn? It looks loved but not abused.

.38/.357Mag

.44/.44Mag

I like the .44s better but the .38/.357's are more available.

My Rock 1911 GI. I shoot it better than anything else and it launches big bullets...

PS- with my new Wilson Combat 10 round mag I just ordered. Shipped today!
