Hey, I just picked a S&W 296Ti in a trade and I am not really sure what it is worth. I am not a 44spl. guy so I am going to let it go. but would like a ball park figure on the value. It is in very good shape 98% and has box and paperwork. Does not have original grip, but another type. I know these are quite rare. I am thinking in the $650 to $700 range. What do you think? Thanks

That's a very fair price range, and one that I would personally purchase the pistol for.

The 296 and 242 are nice guns and acquired tastes, as some love the look, while others hate it. The 296 is similar to the 396 Mountain Lite in terms of light weight (> 20 oz +/-), and packs some fierce recoil.

I saw one at a gun show a couple months ago near here in N.E Ohio. They were asking $750. I can't tell you if it sold or not though.

It had the same box and papers you have, and appeared to be in excellent condition as well. IF it helps. ;)

I found one in a pawn shop and it was a consignment gun. They were asking $650.00 but it was cash only. No trades! Sat there for 3 months and he had it listed on GB! Recoil is a bear on it. I love my 696!

I bought mine for $349... new... on 'closeout' - from a LGS 2/03. They were >$700 MSRP when dropped. I've tried many grips on mine - including the recoil taming X-frame .500 Magnum Hogue/S&W grips. For pocket carry, and, in a Mika pocket holster (It can be done!), the OEM boots (Check S&W Accessories for stock.) are best. It was never meant to be a 'fun' revolver. I usually carry GA Arms version of the Speer 200gr Gold Dot - in brass cases. In the boonies, I carry a 240gr LSWC first up, the 200gr Gold Dots to follow.

I have a 296ti. Recoil can be stout, but manageable. Value, with box. lock and grips, probably $575 to $675 dependng on conditon. I agree with mc5aw, they are an acquired taste. I call mine the baby rhino, but I heard that from the previous owner. They are so ugly they are cute. Here is mine with Ahrends grips.

It is a niche gun, and in my observations they have tended to sell for less than $650, but a motivated buyer may pay that.

Mine is carried in a fanny pack with the Blazer loaded Gold Dots and 2 two speed loaders, and I find it less obnoxious to shoot than a similar .38 J frame with hot .38 loads. I'd guess 600-700 is a fair price, but I can't remember what I paid for mine.

I sold a M296 for $750 plus shipping about two and a half years ago, but it was NIB. $650 to $700 sounds like a fair price for a slightly-used one.

There is one on GunBroker right now with a starting bid of $765 and a buy now of $795. I would think if you are serious about selling that would be the best place to start. You could even start listing at a penny and see how much people are willing to pay.

I love mine and carry it and its sister the 242 quite often, excellent guns for the size and weight but I like the hump back j frames as well so.

Dad and I debated on buying one NIB when they first came out.

Sinfully light and ugly, almost a white color it seemed.

We were shooting .44 Mags and .44 Specials in Red Hawks, Charters SBHs and Model 24s back then.

After seeing it in the display case and playing with what we thought
was a cool Snubby. We called it the Whale (Beluga) Gun, no idea if the Dealer ever sold it- or threw it in the Clearwater River.

Kind of a catch and release.

I'm looking for a model 296, is yours still for sale ? Thanks, Dave

I just bought one the other day for $500. Condition is excellent:

It also came with a laser grip. I will be taking it to the range in the am. I have an X-frame grip I will take with me just in case it try's to kill my hand. ;)

It also came with a laser grip. ;)

I will try using a set of Nil-Grips from Germany:

Love the way the grips completely wrap around the grip frame. This will help with the recoil. Because of the smooth wood grip panels, it will make it easy to slip in and out of a pocket!!!
