Picked Up The New 66

I was wondering if someone on this thread can help me out. My calipers are at my office so i cant pull the height measurement on the factory front sight of my 66-8 2.75". Am considering buying some replacement sights. Can someone tell me the height of the factory sight please? Thanks in advance. /QUOTE]

Mine has a height of .230 inch above barrel. I want to replace it with one minus the red insert.

Best,
Rick

Thank you Rick. Let me know what you go with.

"Glossy black trigger & hammer on the new one look a little "odd", for me.
DA pull on the older is lighter to my un-calibrated finger, both are beyond my 8-pound scale."

I am wondering if they are related. The black finish, whatever it is, might have more friction. Maybe it will get worn off. The pull on my M640Pro seems lighter to my un-calibrated finger. The 640 has been fired quite a bit, both live and dry.

Best,
Rick

Between the two years of manufacture, S&W moved the mainspring seat to create a stiffer pull in compensating for the shorter firing pins.

I'd attribute the difference more to that than the glossy finish on trigger & hammer.

As you've probably deduced, when they change a design aspect in one area, it's a domino effect that results in performance changes elsewhere, leading to other design changes to make up for those.

I got lucky, one of the lightest pulls of any of my none worked triggers.

Frame & cylinder are also longer on the new 66.

What a difference the new stocks make!

Agreed with the OP... the new design with the ball detent not only cosmetically looks better than on my 4.25" 66 (you wouldn't know it's there until you swing the cylinder out), but yeah, it locks up TIGHT, that cylinder isn't going anywhere once it's in place.

Just picked mine up last evening, and I'm absolutely LOVING it. Fit, finish, and attention to detail makes this the nicest Smith I've picked up in the last few years. Barrel alignment is in perfect harmony with the top strap. Not a single mark on it to be found. I'm really impressed, can't wait to get this to the range for a workout!

Really nice and I'm digging the grips!

why not a 3-inch barrel?

Does anyone know why S&W went with a 2.75 inch barrel rather than a 3 inch barrel?

It certainly made sense to give the gun a barrel long enough to take a full length ejection rod, but why not go all the way with what many believe is the perfect barrel length?

Not that I am complaining. I will buy the first one I can get my hands on!

S&W Model 66

Why do you think all of us cops carried S&W model 66's?

Even our old ones still lock up tight and shoot very well. My 1979 4 inch that has millions of holster miles on it and literally tens of thousands of rounds through it will probably out-shoot most revolvers. I also have a 2.5 and 6 inch ones. And amazingly, none of them have that unsightly hole in the side of them. The have to great original internals also....

RE: The model 66's not liking operating when dirty, in 1979 when I attended the Iowa Law Enforcement Academy my model 66 had not yet arrived and I was shooting my 4 inch model 15. We fired a pretty good quantity of .38 special lead 158 grain SWC that left a lot of residue. Most of the officers shooting stainless guns would have to stop after almost every relay and clean the goo out of their revolvers. My old blued-steel model 15 never missed a beat. Of course cleaning it afterwards was quite a chore though!

I don't think I own a S&W made in the current century and I'm not overly familiar with, nor fond of, the "internal lock" models with the frame-mounted firing pin, but I'd agree with Kaaskop49. If you're getting lead shavings coming back at you, that gun needs to go back to Smith ASAP. FYI, the forcing cone is NOT, as somebody claimed, there to compensate for misaligned chambers. It's there because, as Phil Sharpe found out back in pre-war days, a lead bullet comes out of a revolver chamber sort of like toothpaste out of a tube, getting shorter and fatter as it emerges. The forcing cone actually swages it back to the proper diameter. Jacketed bullets probably don't deform as much, but it's likely still measurable, particularly with some of the more radical expanding variety. God only knows what happens with those gimmicky multi-projectile rounds, and I'm not asking Him.

Sir could you please tell me were you purchased the grips from, very nice looking, ads a great look to your wheel gun thank you in advance for your help

I think it was a compromise length. Quite a few wanted a 2.5 inch model for ease of concealment. Others wanted the 3 inch for full length ejector rod. With the single piece barrel M686, it is not hard to offer both. Not so much with the need for a new shroud length, probably harder to change lengths. I think the 2.75 inch is "just right".
I just ordered a Lobo Gun Leather Original Pancake holster for mine today. They said about 6 weeks.

Best,
Rick

question for Hopper regarding your Altamont Altai grips

I just love those grips! But please tell me, if you can, whether you think that they would work for someone with small hands. My hands are about the same size as most women I know.

Looks like I'm out of the loop for this beauty. Once again, S&W has not gotten this gun approved for Mass purchase.. I stopped into my local GS, asked Mike if he could get me one... no dice ... not legal for purchase in Mass.. 5 miles from S&W ... and I can't legally buy one!

Its a miracle S&W is still in Mass. the hostility towards firearms in that state is astounding.
