I only have one .357 revolver myself, and it's a shooter. Not sure of the year but it's a 66-1. Was a police trade in when I bought it back in the mid-90's for $200. Wish I bought more of them back then. It came with the Pachmayrs on it and my late Uncle Bill donated the target stocks to me. He was the one that convinced me to "buy one of them while you still can".
It was a few years later before I knew what a P&R revolver was.

Here is my Highway Patrolman, I have switched the stocks on this with my 629-1. Here it is wearing Kurac Cocobolo smooth targets. It now wears Royal Walnut Kuracs, not pictured. I'll have to take some updated pics of all my smiths since I switched the grios around.
Here is my 27-2, all shined up, I currently have a set of Keith Browns on it, but in this pic, it has the factory targets.
This might be my best looking .357.

Wow! What a great thread covering my favorite caliber handgun.
The Model 66-2 is my first S&W, and also my first stainless steel handgun. I bought it used, and the previous owner was a gunsmith that engine turned the hammer and trigger, and also did a nice action job. After I bought it, I remember showing it to LEOs I knew, and told me I had made a huge mistake buying a "shiny" gun that would be dangerous to use at night as it would give away my position.
The Model 686-3 was my second S&W stainless steel revolver. It was also purchased used, and wearing the Leupold 2x scope as seen in the photo. It is an incredibly accurate handgun.
The Model 13-3 with a 3.0 inch long barrel had been on my grail gun list for well over 20 years before I was finally able to find one at a reasonable price. The Model 13 with the 3.0 inch barrel was the last revolver issued to FBI agents.
Also on my grail gun list was the Model 65 - also with a 3.0 inch long barrel. I purchased the Model 65-3 in the photo from a fellow Forum member about a year after purchasing the Model 13-3 (above). Someday, I'd love to find a Model 65 with the shrouded ejector rod (the Ladysmith version) at a reasonable price.

Ok, challenge accepted. This will be my educated guess. Internal lock says 66-6 or 66-7. Black front sight says -7 to me. And the final piece is the tip of the barrel looks like a 2 piece and your accuracy statement lends me to believe it is a 2 piece so my final answer is 66-7. However I thought they had "case hardened" MIM hammer and triggers. Yours look like they're from an older model? Of course I could be wrong!

Clockwise from the top left, they are a 6" 686-4 PowerPort, a 6" 686-3 Classic Hunter, a 4" 686-3 with target trigger and hammer and the pride and joy of the group, my 5" 686-3 National Match (I apologize for its imported stocks but they are comfortable).
Then there are my real favorites, my Model 66s. From top to bottom, they are a 6" 66-2 with target trigger and hammer and a Millett rear sight, a 4" 66-2 with target trigger and hammer and a trigger stop and a 2-1/2" 66-4.
I also have some 617s, 629s and two S&W 1911s but they're the wrong caliber for this thread.

Cylinder stop nothches aligning with the flutes Points to a 7 shot L frame 686+ , MIM / IL frame is dash 6 or higher, half lug barrel was a stocking dealer special .
Here is a 686-5+ 7 shot Mountain gun for comparison and 357 picture enjoyment

You just gave me an "ah hah" moment! I overlooked the 7 shot cylinder. So I will retract my previous guess at a 66-7 and call this a 620. If I remember correctly the 686 dealer was a 5" barrel. The 620 also had the hard chromed looking hammer and trigger as this gun has. So that is my new guess!

Ed Please Tell us about the Checkered Combats on your 5" 686-3. Was that Barrel Custom cut? I don't remember there being a 5" 686.
