I have been looking for a model 60 for a while and found one locally at one of the new tacticool gun stores that sells nothing but Glocks and AR's, this thing stands out like a sore thumb. Anyway, it's in really good shape and has the box and papers, has smooth J frame target stocks which I am unsure if they are original or not. What is the going rate of these recently? I know everything is more expensive, but they had $580 on it and would not budge, and for a J frame, that seems way high. I dont recall the serial number, but it had a 70's Bangor Punta blue box.

It's $100 high or so, even with an original box. The target stocks are not original but make it easier to shoot.

I just picked up a Model 60 (no dash), with non-original S&W banana grips, from my local shop. I saw it on the bench and bought before they even filled out the tag.
The drag line was barely visible on it and i think i shot it more last weekend, than its been shot in it's 43 year life.

I paid $350.00 for it and i thought that was a steal.

I also recently bought one with banana grips for $300 private party. There is one at a local shop with the box for $650 which I think is outrageous.

I tricked mine out with some stag grips....and it still needs a good polish.

I thought their asking price at 580 was pretty outrageous too.

In good to excellent condition, with or without the box, documents and/or tools, a Model 60 usually ballparks in the $350.00 - $450.00 price range in this area (Austin, TX). However, recently I've seen a spike in the price of a Model 60 of around $100.00 to $150.00 on top of the usual price. I don't know why. Used Model 60s, at least with the 2.0 inch barrels are fairly uncommon around here. With the current price tag for a used one at $500.00+ it may even become more rare.

Regards,

Dave

A 60 is one of the guns that you MUST own. It's like a 10, or 66. EVERYONE has at least one.

I think everyone should own at least 1 model 60 as well. I own a 60-4 with a 3 inch full lug. Love it. Especially with the combats and 38 special.

I think a pinned no dash M60 is worth $400 - $500. Box and papers put it closer to $500. $580 is steep. You could overpay by $80 and take it home now or keep looking for one under $500.

There seems to be a recent panic buy of anything S&W with a pinned barrel spiking the asking prices. J-Frames seem to have been the last to be effected by it, but now it's reached them too.

I've bought three no-dash 60's in the past 8 or 9 months. The first was a private party gun for $425, the second from a LGS at $425 out-the-door (the price on my first one determined what I was willing to pay), originally tagged at something like $439 plus tax. These two were both pinned barrels. The third was a private party non-pinned gun, I ended up giving $400 for that one. The LGS one was probably the best deal, no box but good shape & had the original s/n'd grips. With box and etc it was probably worth $500.
Joesmith, if I was you I'd take five c-notes into the "tacticool" shop and ask them if they wanted to sell that gun right now .....or watch you and your money walk away.

Would a low serial number, in 4 digits R range, and original grips matching to the serial number increase the value of the gun?

I have one that I bought around the turn of the century from an old friend for $200.00.

I gave it to my wife as a glove box revolver. We divorced in 2006, so I agreed to buy her a new one for the pinned one back.

After buying it twice, I have about the tacticool store's asking price in mine. I wanted that particular revolver, so it was worth every penny to me.

They aren't making new one's like it, so it's worth what someone that really wants one is willing to pay?

Would I pay $550.00+ for any other one? No Sir. I wouldn't consider it, but I'm no collector either.

In a word, yes. It would increase even more if it had the original s/n'd box. But in both cases, how much it increases the value is up to the buyer.
