I saw that. Makes me think I really got a good buy in my plain jane RM last month.

they will print them out in the next week, you had to be a registered bidder to watch the auction live, and then see what the gavel prices were.

As I recall from the short-lived post earlier this week looking for advice on valuation for this particular gun, that's pretty much exactly what the consensus here predicted...

Egads.

I'm not actually surprised, S&W auctions are bonkers lately. I still didn't expect it to go that high. I think someone bought very early with that gun.

Here is another very similar gun. This is a 1902 1st change target that I just bought.
Serial number is 37XXX.

This gun was factory engraved by one of Gustav Young's two sons. Its the same
concept, with a nickel cylinder, nickel sideplate and mainspring screws, and nickel
studs for the hammer, trigger, and trigger rebound mechanism.

I was "watching" the auction online and on the telephone and two bidders really wanted that gun. In this case, I think that this was not an "early" or "late" thing, rather it was purchased by someone who did not care what he had to pay to get what he wanted - It was just Buying when It was Available. My guess...price was NOT the object. Scarcity and uniqueness were the object.

My second guess is that those auction photos are the last we will ever see of that beautiful revolver...:( I hope that I'm wrong and that someone on the forum here won it and will "share" some more detailed photos of that gun.:o

It was a live auction at a high end auction house, advertised beforehand for two months, so there was no early or late, just a two minute span to see who wanted it the most. And as was pointed out in the earlier thread, the rarity factor on this one is off the chart.

He is referring to an old saying about fine collectibles:

"You didn't pay too much for it, you just paid it early."

The inference is that truly fine, desirable collectibles will always appreciate. ;)
