Rumors of various companies with pistol caliber carbines for Shot 2013. Any chance Smith will be one of them?
No other company are making carbines that will use M&P mags. Would be a great addition to the M&P line. Also, with the likelehood of a renewed assault weapons ban, pistol ammunition "should" be relatively available vs the golden bulk rounds (5.56 and 7.62).
Most importantly however is would a pistol caliber carbine fall under a likely AWB even if Smith did have one in the lineup? If it's an AR style, this may be an obvious answer.
