Pistol or shotgun ?

For me it would be a shotgun, I keep a supernova at the bedside, it has a tactical light and red dot sight. I'm comfortable with it setting there even though there is a Springfield xdm close by.

Shotgun for sure a defender with an 18" barrel good close range pattern and won't penetrate outside walls also when you chamber a round with a pump if that doesn't scare someone away they deserve what's next

I have a CZ10 C with a Streamlight TLT-1 mounted on the gun and a full magazine with 147 HST or Winchster Ranger ammo.

No use for an AR-I'm kinda fond of ground hogs. Have 2 12 gauge shotguns around the house-short barrels-hidden in plain sight-#4. Easy access to a camp 9 with 30 rnd mag at night. Mrs. and I both have 38's at bed side. 6 claymores, and a command det tank mine in driveway. Luke 22:35

I would choose a shotgun over a pistol every time. Having said that, I have unloaded my 12g and stored it in the safe, and now keep my 45 by the bed. Why? Because I fear coming home to find my shotgun being pointed at me by an intruder inside my home, and I'm too lazy to put it inside the safe when I leave the house. My pistol is always on my hip when I leave the house.

I keep a .45 cal Shield next to me on the night stand.. That should hold me until I get to my closet, then out comes the 18" barreled Remington 870 12ga. loaded with #4 buckshot. If they are still around, then comes the S&W M&P 15 with a 30 round magazine.. Hopefully by that time, the Police have decided to show up...

I think some of you need to do some research on wall penetration by various calibers. from what I have seen the 5.56 will go through less wall than either a 9mm or OO buck.

At the moment, a suppressed Five-seveN pistol. I would also feel quite comfortable with my Governor. It's loaded with .410 defensive rounds and .45 Long Colt to seal the deal.

Agreed. I've seen similar "tests" done, and it seemed that most 5.56 begins to tumble after hitting drywall/wood, thus severely reducing its momentum. 9mm ball ammo, and 00 buck, goes through several walls ... I will try to find a link, but I believe one source was on Shooting Gallery (Outdoor Channel).

Groo here
It depends on your skill and training.
FOR ME that would be a pistol with a high output light[500lm or better]
That shotgun is too long and low cap for inside. [hard to hold reloads in your underwear]
The pistol can be used one handed , shotgun not so much.
Shotgun works if BG out side trying to get in.[ beats rifle at power]
Rifle is best outside where you have seperation [range] allowing P.B.P.

If I'm sure someone is IN the house already I'm grabbing the Mossberg 12ga which is already loaded (cruiser ready?) with #4 buck shot.....getting my family behind me and posting up behind something heavy.

My wife/kids will be on the phone calling the county's finest and we'll see where things go.

I've discussed this with my crew and they know what to do and where to retreat to.

If it's just a bump in the night...probably my stupid cats...I grab a revolver and go investigate....

Both, I usually have whatever pistol I'm carrying at the time loaded & within easy reach. (takes my old eyes a while to regain focus when awoken in the middle of the night so it is basically a belly gun until I am up for a few minutes)

I also have a bedside SRM 1216 (short 16 shot 12ga shotgun). First 5 rounds are #4 buck, next 5 are 00 buck, last 6 rounds are slugs. Shotgun has a high lumen light & an auto adjusting red dot sight.

I have a close & far bathroom in my house (far one is 5 rooms & 75 feet away), sometimes when I get up in the middle of the night to pee I will grab the SRM 1216 & practice clearing my house to the far bathroom (eye opening, or should I say eye blurring for the first few seconds until my night vision comes on line)

an intruder better hope I grab a pistol, but I'd opt for the 12 gauge pump.

Both the FBI and ATF have researched and concluded that 5.56X45 ammo will penetrate less housing material than typical pistol calibers and shotgun ammo. The risk presented by such is a lot less if you don't miss.

Rifle or ar have too much penetration unless they hiding behind your neighbors fridge...ar will go thru walls...kill innocent bystander its a murder charge...

Good 5.56 SD ammo penetrates no more than good handgun SD ammo; this is a myth.

My myth penetrated house trailer long ways with junk..exit other side.
