Playing with a drone.

The question that this raises for me is, if you had driven off in the truck would the drone have followed the truck? Or would it have remained in that same place, circling the location where the truck had been? Just how smart is this drone?

Varies... Some can recognize hand gestures, others would get lost if glued to the floor

Yup, you can program it to follow you, either from the front or behind.

May I encourage all new drone operators to get at least the 1st (and free) drone operators license. It is all on line.. I mention this not because I am a drone police etc... but, drones are becoming more and more regulated due to many reasons, and one of these is careless use by careless people. Irregardless of if we like it or not flying a drone is a regulated activity. I want to enjoy flying my drone for many years to come.

Great......I'd hate for it to go pppphhhhtttt and fall into a pond or tree.
A Chinese company, DJI, makes the most advanced and affordable drones on the market today. Although different models have different features, I'm pretty sure they all have the return to home feature when the drone thinks the there only enough battery life to return to the home point. It's not infallible, especially if there's a strong headwind in play or obstacles to ne avoided, but it works pretty well. Of course there is also a meter showing the battery life, so a pilot should never be in such a situation (LOL). Unfortunately, with the uncertainty of tariffs and possible legislation aimed at importing Chinese made drones (developed and being pushed by a US drone company, DJI drones are in very short supply.

My granddaughter's other family had an uncle that had won two lotteries, he had more money than cents and was into all kinds of R/C aircraft including a $5K helicopter that had a rotor spread of over six feet. He had one of the first private drones I had ever seen or even at that point heard about, this must have been close to fifteen years ago. It had the four-rotor system and had a remote-controlled camera. He flew it all around the campsite we had all descended on, taking pictures of the area. When he got it back to camp, he downloaded the footage and entertained us all with the film. It was pretty amazing to me at the time, but I never had much interest in R/C stuff then or today. My son got interested and I supported his financial needs and was crew chief for his vehicles, keeping them running, those things were expensive then. Titanium tie rods and miniature oil filled shock absorbers.
