6" no box or other extras, just the gun. It has target sights and looks like a trigger stop? The blue appears to be original and the line around the cylinder is very faint. Assuming the grips are not original either?
 
Original grips would be checkered walnut magnas with medallions. Just the gun with standard appointments, minus the original grips, box, and docs, in the condition you describe, I'd say $600 on the low end, and $750 on the high end.
 
The grips look like John Hurst grips. The late John Hurst was an LAPD academy firearms instructor and Olympic pistol shooter. I just bought a nickel pre-27 with some strange grips on it. Our fellow S&W Forum folks educated me on John Hurst, thankfully.

I hope you own the gun by now. That is a heck of a good price for a Model 14-4, considering the right side looks as good as the left side. You best grab it before someone else does.
 
It really was clean and tight. The one pic doesn't do it justice. It'll be Monday evening, but I will post pics when I get it.
I believe your right about the grips being Herrett's. A quick search brought up the exact pair.

One pic has the serial number maybe someone could help me figure the born on date. I was told probably 1981?
