Here's some pics attached. Just had this pistol pretty much fall into my lap for next to nothing nearly. Just curious what year it was made and if there was any interesting info on it. A price check would be nice to have as well.

It's a 5-shot with 2 visible screws (idk if the grip is covering any screws or not), and the serial number is 51J256

A photo of the other side and with the cylinder open would help.

Looks like a 1970s made Model 36. A letter in the serial number is new to me though.

There is (or should be) another screw under the right side grip panel.

Here's more pictures.

You asked about value, and the model 36s offered around here run in the $350 to $550 range depending on condition and original accessories.

I have seen a few right tatty Century Arms imports at $325, but your revolver looks far better than those.

Recently many in the condition as yours have been bringing bids in the $375-425 range on Gunbroker.

Welcome! This one has an unusual serial number format only used from 1971-'73 and I would guess yours is from about 1972.

So $500 max value? That's with original box included? I figured I could get more than that with it since it's in very good condition.

Welcome from Virginia

Welcome to the Forum from Virginia!

You have what I believe is known as a "floating J" serial number which as already posted was only used 1971 to 1972 by S & W.

Also from the frame stamp "Mod 36" I would say you have a Model 36 "no dash".

Mine pictured below is a January 1967 ship date and has the original box and documents. I have an insurance value of $600 on this gun and box, and that is about the going rate around here IF you see one for sale.

If the box you have is THE ORIGINAL (with matching end label) and documents then I would say you are in the ballpark at $600 for a private sale. Repop boxes and end labels abound on flea-bay and add absolutely nothing to any knowledgeable buyers.

Gun only in good to very good condition is right around $500 for the last private sale I saw in this area but indeed, that was 2 years ago, pre-pandemic, and when private sales were still allowed between individuals without having to visit an FFL and pay $25 - $35 transfer fee.
