I have an older Lyman gun screwdriver set and I swear all the bits are much too THICK to use on almost all gun screws!

Can anyone recommend a decently priced BASIC gun screwdriver set?

Thanks much!

Sir,

I have a set by Chapman, I believe 14pcs., which I bought from Midway as I recall. It has worked for all the screws on my Smiths, and held up well.

Hope that is somewhat helpful.

I too use the Chapman set and also have an old set of Bonanza screwdrivers from the 70's that do a great job for not much money.

Check Brownells. I have a basic set from there that was fairly inexpensive.

Re the bit blades being too thick on the set you have, seems to me that I have read that gunsmiths will grind them to fit, and that traditionally that is how they were able to fit perfectly. (Then again, I may be wrong!;))

If you have an Academy Sporting Goods anywhere near...or online for that matter, they sell a very inexpensive set that has done all I need. They include tips that have fit perfectly in most any screws I've tried.

The brand is DAC Gunmaster. Comes with 25-30 different tips and is less than $10.

Thanks for all the recommendations folks and keep them coming! Lyman used to be the premier gun screwdriver sets ever but ALL their screwdriver tips are way TOO WIDE to use on guns nowadays.

Brownells once sold, and probably still does, a driver with interchangeable bits precisely fit to all standard S&W screws, which store in the hollow handle --- I keep one in my goes-everywhere kit bag. Seems to me I've added an extra bit, maybe to fit aftermarket grip screws, but the basic set will let you strip any modern S&W revolver with precision-fit bits. Otherwise, there are any number of alternative sets, but like with much else, bigger is better.

Another vote for CHAPMAN

I have had and used a CHAPMAN set for thirty years. Have not found any job they could not handle.

Have handled some more expensive sets that were nicer, but somewhat more expensive.

A set that has individual screwdrivers instead of changeable inserts does look better on the workbench. The price difference looks nice in my pocket.

Based on a sample of only one set of each, I'd rate them in this order:
Brownell's
Chapman
Midway
As with most things, you get what you pay for. Spend a little more and go with Brownell's.
