Had a GREAT day on the range today. I don't have a huge collection but I do have a variety of autos and revolvers and sometimes I think I take too much to the range. There are three guns in my regular carry rotation and I try to shoot some through 1, 2 or all three of them every time I go. I like my 1911's and usually want to shoot at least one of them. The M18 and the Ruger .22 go with me just about every time because, well, they're .22's and why not!! I guess it boils down to I don't go to the range as often as I'd like so when I do, I want to squeeze in as much as possible.

Today it was just 3 k-frames; my M64/4" HB round butt; M19 2-1/2" and M10 square butt/tapered 4" barrel. I did a lot of DA shooting. I think I shoot SA a lot because I want to see nice tight groups before the targets go in the trash. Today I was shooting surprisingly nice groups DA - just throwing lead and having a ball. 3 K-frames and 3 boxes of 158gr. LRN...Good simple fun!!

Anyway, I definitely prefer round-butts but I bought the M10 just because I've always admired this classic configuration. It came with Pachmayr Grippers which, aside from being black rubber on a blued gun (yuck!) are also just a little too much for this svelte, nimble wheelie. I had spare pairs of both Magna's and Target's for the M10. It wears the Magna's because the Target's just seem too big, too. The Magna's look right but the guns bounces in my hand a little and I have to keep re-adjusting my grasp. The M64 wears Pachmayr Compac Professionals that leave the back-strap exposed and fill-in just enough of the front-strap too give and keep good purchase while still being relatively small and not overpowering the overall balance of the gun. I have regular Compacs on a couple K-rounds. They're about the same on the front strap but cover the back strap without being too big for the gun.

Now, I was only half-kidding about the "yuck". All my guns are shooters and will wear the best grips for that purpose. Looks count a little, too, but "shoot-ability" first. If Pachmayr made Professional Compac's or regular Compac's for a square butt frame I would have them already. So my question is if anyone knows of a grip (rubber, plastic, wood, whatever) that is close in profile to the Pach's but made to fit a square-butt? (Pics would be nice.)

(Sorry for taking 4 paragraphs to ask a quick little question but I was just giddy after my range session.!)

I have both factory magnas and fake ivories by Altamont on mine.

For looks and nostalgia, get S&W Magnas. For shooting, try Hogue. For carry, try Hogue Bantam if they make them for the K frame square butt. If not, try something like an Eagle Secret Service grip or similar.

Shooter6br's Safariland/Rogers grips are for some, including me, about the best grips ever designed for the square-butt K frame. The main competition is a pair of Pachmayr Presentation (small) grips.

If you don't like plastic or rubber, and Magnas with a Tyler are bit large, you might try service (round-top) grips with a Tyler.

Still like the Rogers best.

Uncle Mike's used to make a rubber, gently finger-grooved version for the square butt K-frame. It's no longer listed in the S&W Store section of their website. Looks terrible, yet fits the hand well. Affords recoil control on K-frame mags. Wouldn't part with the 2 I have. Perhaps on-line, Numrich, etc.? Maybe check the WTS section of this Forum?

Hogue's just don't work for me, but these are perfect in the hand (even if not so visually attractive)

I have tried just about everything. These two, which are very hard to find these days, are very good. Uncle Mike's Boot Grips and Pachmayr Gripper Professional (open backstrap)

Maybe something from Ahrends Grips?
They are slimmer than S&W target grips.

Alan, I just bought 5 of those grips. They are for converting RB grip frames to SB configuration, not for an original SB.

Not backbiting, I just don't want the OP to get the wrong grip!

I've got a pair of Ahrends smooth on my RB M19 snubby. I love the look and feel of them but not sure if they're available for a SB. Guess I'll try an adapter with the Magna's for now. Wish this was a tapered barrel/round butt (did S+W make that combo?)
