Please tell me all about the 696

I've had my 696 for years. I paid about $400, if I remember correctly. I love it. Years ago I called S&W to see if they could make a custom 4" barrel; no chance. I am amazed by the razor-edge accuracy of this revolver. I handload both .44 Russian and .44 Special for practice, and use Winchester Silver Tips for carrying. And it is my primary carry gun. The youngsters here refer to it as a blunderbuss, but this revolver is part of my personality. A .44 Special makes a statement that a 9mm can't.

Hi jag312....
Have you done any expansion tests on those Silver Tips? I haven't, personally, but I've heard bad results with no expansion. That particular bullet needs more velocity (only 900 fps. out of a 6.5" bbl.) Imagine what you're getting out of the 3-inch.

I'd hate to think that you'd be carrying something that might not expand when needed.

Mine clocked almost 1300fps out of my Dan Wesson with 4" barrel installed, and it would been a real handfull if it had been a smaller N frame Smith, and N fram probably would rattle loose with the load . Now I will say that my B/C gap is kept at .002/.003 inch unless target plinking so as not to need frequent front of cylinder cleaning to prevent binding.

Bet those suckers would really whizz out of my Marlin 1894P even though it's just a 16" ported barrel. :D

Sorry I did not mention I roll my own, I have very few factory rounds in any centerfire, rifle or handgun ammo on hand. I have hand loaded Winchester Silvertips for 44 and 10mm on hand, never looked to see if they even make them for 357 for some reason. Been useing Silvertip Winchester in 257 Roberts over 50 years both factory and hand loads.

I have never chronographed Silver Tips or fired them into a gelatin block to see how they expand. If anyone has any suggestions of any other factory loads, I am listening. I am very willing to upgrade to better ammunition.

As I remember, Winchester 200gr Silver Tips chronoed very poorly out of my M696 (like 750 fps). This was several years ago, so they might be better now.

On the other hand, the CCI Blazer load (using Speer's 200gr Gold Dot Hollow Point bullets) chronographs right at 900 fps. For carry, I use the Blazers...

I chrono-ed my loads - the Speer #4427 200gr Gold Dot JHPs over 5.7 gr of Titegroup in Starline brass with Federal LP primer - and compared them with Georgia Arms 200gr GDJHP and the CCI variant to get a range of 834-843 fps for the trio from my 696's 3" tube. All had SD's <10 fps. I stopped using the Al-cased Blazers after one split it's case in my 696, making it hard to extract. They were my only ammo for my 2.5" hammerless AirLite Ti 296 until then - I shoot only my reloads or GA Arms similar loads nowadays. The bullet is designed for full opening at 800 fps - which it barely eclipsed from the 296. BTW, I never broke 900 fps with any of those loads from my revolvers - including 6.5" 24's. The GA Arms variant made 947 fps from my Henry .44M lever gun - but it had a 20" barrel!

The meteoric price increase of the Blazers actually helped my decision to buy the cheaper GA Arms variant - plus you get once-shot Starline brass instead or Al cases. One of our good TX members posted his results in brisket with various .44 Special loads - the low speed 200gr GD in .44 Special was impressive. Speer did make a thicker/less pre-stressed Gold Dot in .45 Colt and designed for high speed opening - the Blazer ammo with that bullet makes over 1,000 fps from a 4" tube. A later thin walled 250 gr version, the Speer #4484 Gold Dot, also opens well at 800 fps. Both a mid-point 5.7 gr Titegroup and the Speer ammo, which is pricey, easily best that velocity requirement. Sadly, neither bullet in .45 Colt is listed now on Speer's site. My point is simple - if you like that 200gr low speed .44 Special Gold Dot - grab the bullets and ammo where & when you find them! They, too might evaporate...

The 200gr .44 Special Gold Dots do a great job on pop bottles full of water, too. I no longer fear attacks by marauding pop bottles of water, bushwhacking briskets, or ambushes by Jell-O. If you carry your 696 (or 4" 629...) for protection from 2-legged predators, you should have confidence.

I was at the range this morning while still cool (78*F) 95% humidity at 7AM and playing with the 240gr LRNFP rounds I loaded over the weekend and shot a 1" group at 50 yards out of a 16.25" barrel Marlin 1894P and the 44 round just amazes me with how accurate it is regardless of the gun used, revolver or rifle, or the brand.

PS currently 97*F and humidity down to 92% at last check about 15 minutes ago.

I just happened upon a sweet 696-1 in my local shop in pristine condition. I had put money down on a C@!t Trooper and was going in to pick it up when I saw the 696 in the case. I immediately asked the fine young gentleman if he could apply what I had on the Trooper to the 696. Will pick it up in a few weeks and promise to post pics.

To prove my point took the 36 year old Ruger 44 Carbine automatic to the range last week and did 1.5" at 50 and 1" at 25 yards. The Ruger has cheap 4x32 Simmons scope and Mrlin a Redfield 2x7x32 scope, so maybe the difference is scope...I doubt that, but you never know.

And yes the weather was about the same or worse.

I saw a nice 696 at the Ohio Gun Collectors Show last weekend. It had a price tag of $900.00. That was a bit pricey for me...

If I run onto one for about $600, tho', it'll be tough to resist.

Good luck....

The only way you'll run into one for $600. is if the seller doesn't realise what he's got.
But hey...you never know.

They are great revolvers but stick to factory ammo or near factory spec reloads. The 696 and 296 have the thinnest forcing cones that I have seen on any revolver. Jacketed bullets and high pressure are a bad mix for a 696.

Best Regards,
