I was just at the gun show and saw a 2.5" stainless model 66, pinned barrel/recessed cylinder. Good shape except on the side without the sideplate, there was a bit of rust pitting (yes, it's SS, but had rust on this spot) about 1/4" round/irregular spot. Looked like someone had tried to clean it but the pitting was too deep. The guy wanted $550 for it, and the gun looked in fair to good shape, not excellent. DId I pass up a deal? What would a good price have been?

If it makes you feel any better, based on what you have described, "I" would have passed... There will be another deal down the road! Really!

Getting SS to rust takes some real effort, and the $550 is a premium price. If that's as low as he would go then I would not feel bad walking away from it. Now if you could get him down to $400 then maybe.

sleep well you did the right thing as that was to high a price for that one.

You did good to walk away.It was priced to high.If it had been $300, that would have been a good price.

I think you were wise to pass on it unless you lived in California like me. Even with a rust spot that is a $600 dollar revolver in California gun shops.

I don't post often, but I will jump in here. I went to two good gun shows the last two weekends. Prices are coming down as the economy gets worse. I saw several P&R 66's and don't think one was over $550 and many were very nice with boxes.

$600! No way, don't give in to artificial inflation. Some people think K-Frame magnums are made of gold......was it in the case next to a $500 holster worn, loose Colt Official Police? Sounds like one of my local gun shops.......he had a 6" 686 that looked like someone had it buried in the mud for 20 years, priced at $500.....

I also would have passed at that price. In order to cause that spot of rusting on a stainless gun takes a lot of inattention. Makes me wonder what possible problems there are that you can't see.

I will be the lone loser here. I would have snapped it up. I just don't see combat magnums where I live. And I'm betting if you had cash in your hand then the price would have gone down at least a little. The condition of the barrel would be the biggest price issue for me. But then I have to confess to paying too much for a worn 2.5 inch 19 recently so I may be biased.

Yep, walk away was the smart thing. Walk away is always the right thing to do if that little voice says "something is wrong". Occasionally the small voice is mistaken, but not often.
