Pocket Carry

When I pocket carry it is a model 37 in a Mika pocket holster. This thread and previous threads on concealed carry in pocket have caused me to consider options due to the "snagging of hammer" potential. I took the 37 to our local gunsmith to have the hammer bobbed. He won't do it. He feels the bobbed hammer with less mass will cause light primer strikes and possibly put the gun in a fail to fire condition. I also have a model 36 that could be the carry piece, but we have the same issues unless the hammer situation is different due to a steel frame - but I suspect the two hammers weight the same so no difference in his theory.

Should I look for a different gunsmith or look for a Model 642?

For those whose guns have exposed hammers, one trick is to train yourself to put your trumb over the hammer spur as you start your draw.
This can also help to 'push' the holster down, reducing the chance it will be drawn with the gun. In some circumstances pointing a holstered gun can be side-splitting funny, but not in an SD confrontation.

In reply to the OP ... My pocket carry is a Kahr P380 in DeSantis Nemesis pocket holster. I've found this combination to be light, doesn't print, and the gun is reliable.

Depending on the pants / shorts I am wearing, I carry a 642 or Bodyguard 380. I prefer the 642 if I am wearing pants with a sturdy pocket. It is a little heavier, but I feel safer with a 38 special.

Modify the pocket(s) in which you carry your revolver. Make them deeper. It helps to have someone in the family who has more than a passing familiarity with a sewing machine...

Your local dry cleaner will probably have a seamstress on the staff. Pocket additions are cheap. And you can get this done in a couple of days without having to complain to your family.

Seecamp 380 is way thinner than my smith 340 and looks like a cellphone in the pocket. The j frame is just to bulky for my pocket.

Here in Indiana, in the wintertime, the 340, or a Kahr PM9, is OK in my jacket or coat pocket. In warmer weather, must agree with the thinking that a J-frame is just too much in a front pants pocket, for me, anyway. In the past I used a Seecamp .32 for that. They are a bit heavy, and reluctantly I changed to the lighter-weight plastic guns like the P3AT, LCP, and Bodyguard380. Of those three, I prefer the Bodyguard because of the better sights and the safety. It is slightly bigger, but not enough to cause any trouble.

To carry anything bigger than the P3AT/LCP/BG380 I would prefer to have it in a good, leather belt holster, but I am lazy about putting them on/taking them off, and I do not like holsters with metal clips or IWB holsters.

Pocket carry always seems like a very second-class way to carry a pistol, but it is convenient - maybe a little too convenient.

I carry a 1968 Charter undercover 38 in a uncle Mikes or Blackhawk pocket holster.
