police dept who used mod 27 3 1/2''

Does anyone know the Serial Numbers on the 1950 order for the Kansas City Police Department. I have a 1950 Manufactured 357 Serial Numbered 757xx. would this gun possibly be a Kansas City gun. Thank you for your time.

I can only vouch for one of those SNs; mine is S77886.

What a great thread! I confess I sure do LOVE older S&W revolvers, so this is all fascinating. I especially appreciate pics of the older/worn guns that saw plenty of use.

Have always found it interesting that N frame anythings - .38-44, .357, .44, etc seem to have been commonplace in LE from the midwestern states to the West coast, but very little presence on the Eastern portion of the US.

Guess LE in that region were fine with their milieu of Police Positives, Official Police and H.E.'s and M&P's.

When I started in Law Enforcement. in 1972. Most officers in my area of Southern Illinois carried a large caliber Revolver. I personally in my Law Enforcement career have carried S&W M&P, S&W model 10, S&W model 28, Colt Trooper, S&W model 686, Glock 17, Model 1911 in both 45 caliber and 38 super. I think that the 357 magnum was popular because we mostly worked alone in a rural area which usually meant that if we needed to use our Revolver it was at a longer distance. with a possibility that we would have to shoot through automobile doors.

Here's one that was carried by a deputy Sheriff in Poughkeepsie, NY in the early 1950's. Still has his name/badge # engraved inside the right grip panel. This one was carried daily and was all business by the looks of it. The lanyard ring was ordered with the gun. Notice the off-set serial number on the butt. :)

It's possible you saw a few officers with them.
Technically it was not authorized because
regulations called for a 4-inch barrel. But
I knew of a couple officers who had them and
carried them.

The most likely revolvers per regulation in
Chicago holsters were Colt Official Police,
S&W Models 10, 15 or 19.

kaaskop49 is correct.

The pre 27 3 1/2' was carried in abundance by the Chicago Police until the early 70's. Then the M66 and similar K frames, some N's and Colts all with the now standard 4" barrel became the required frame.
