Police Officer Caught on Camera Doing It Right

Now that was handled professionally. I think that officer would of acted that way if he was being recorded or not.

The subject was asking for problems .... I dunno why you would carry an unloaded firearm unless you were trying to look tough and asking for problems.

Perhaps to bring attention to the foolishness of the law.

if this was legal why did he even stop the guy?

Simple. If a citizen complains, you have to make the call. The officer stepped out of his car saying they had calls about a man with a gun and they wanted to see what it was all about.

The man was an idiot. Refusing to give your name around here will put you in jail. Wearing a gun is more likely to get you a cup of coffee at a nearby cafe than an arrest.

When I am stopped, I will give my name, show the officer my ID, my credentials and list my family history if need be.

Lots of us have QUIETLY and LEGALLY had our guns within arms reach for all our lives, utilizing various 'exceptions' to the concealed and loaded gun laws. Folks who imagine that they have to be totally disarmed in this state, haven't done their homework....so more fool them!

The last thing we need is these open carry bozos getting all gun owners a lot of unwanted attention! Those who feel they need to parade around flaunting their guns under everybody's noses, are just idiots. The guy in the video, was clearly baiting the cops. To their credit, they didn't fall for it. This doesn't help anyone.

And yes.....my personal experience as a young man was that Oceanside cops were never ever that polite!!!

Not sure about the others here but I resent being called an idiot. I have a very good education, over 8 yrs of college and almost 40 yrs of working with police, the courts and in the legal field. I am listed in Westlaw for two cases I worked and have gotten a couple of laws changed. My IQ is two steps above normal. I carry concealed and I carry open and there is nobody that pays attention or gets alarmed by it. As recently as yesterday morning, I was at a local McDonalds and noticed a lady openly carrying, the man she was talking with was openly carrying and I was openly carrying. There was not panic in the place, the police was not called and nobody left in fear.

I am a long way from being an idiot. Now I wouuld agree the guy in the video is an idiot.

Because they received a call about a man on the street with a gun. It's their job.

Then the police dispatchers need more training. Around here a "man with a gun" call is supposed be handled with a "What is he doing?...Standing in line at 7-11 buying a cup of coffee? Nothing illegal about that sir/maam. Thank you for your concern. Have a good-day."

No different than a call saying "I saw a man walking down the street."

I see both sides of carry open/concealed because i carry both ways.I have more reasons to carry concealed than just public outcry.I work for walmart and it may prove fatal to my job.

I have almost gotten to the point of saying to heck with it and started o/cing.I'm not trying to make a statement, but more just getting tired of dressing around some of the guns i love to carry.

Who wants to c/c a 686 4 inch .357 or a 4506 or a glock 22,i do it because i don't want or need trouble. It gets hard sometimes to find a reason to wear 2 shirts/iwb holster or some super tuck cross breed over the shoulder bolder holder holster thats made out of imitation naugahide.

forgive me for saying this but i don't like little guns because 1(i don't shoot them well 2(my hands just don't fit the grips well 3(I shouldn't have to go out and buy/trade guns to get something smaller just so i can conceal it.I don't even shoot my wife glock 23 well and it's not that small.

I have seen it more than once, people say things like that gun isn't a range gun or that gun is to big for carry and should only be a range gun,if i have a gun that i can't comfortably shoot well at the range, then i aint carrying it.I shoot big guns well.

I think that some police might agree with you. From the looks of this video and others, police are getting tired of people "freaking out" when seeing someone OC in California. Here's a cop asking a guy to tell others he walks buy that his gun is not loaded so they don't "panic". I think it's an absurd request, but it's an indicator of frustration.

Ok, I agree here. However, it will depend on the location. Those in CA are not accustomed to seeing people walking down a road while armed.

If someone called in an "armed person" call in Louisiana, the dispatcher would ask what harm they were doing and if anyone was being threatened. It is not unusual to see an armed citizen.

That's how you get people used to it..."There's nothing illegal happening here. " If every time they get a call they roll units, they're treating it as something unusual.

So Louisiana law requires you to identify yourself to the cops even if they have no basis to believe that you've engaged in criminal conduct or have any legal basis to detain you? Wow.

Ummm.... I think the point is that LOC is illegal in Kalifornistan but UOC isn't.

Might go back & peruse the thread again. I'm nowhere near 2 steps above normal & I have no problem grasping the concept.

I'm going on the assumption that LOC is legal in Loozyana...

Not really-but if you don't ID yourself, you stand a pretty good chance ofof being arrested or otherwise detained under Louisiana's prohibition against being an alpha hotel. This prohibition can take many forms, like a disturbing the peace charge, littering by pitching that cigarette butt, Public intimidation by saying "who's your supervisor" implying you are threatening their job, and so on. A ride down to the station, several hours of "processing" before being cut loose without any arrest, perhaps having to pay a bail bondsman 12% of a $1000 bond to be released, maybe even spending the night in jail and then released on a summons. Then the DA refuses the charges and life goes on. In my humble opinion it's a lot easier in life not being an alpha hotel unless it is REALLY necessary. If this is high up on your "REALLY necessary" list than go for it-it just ain't that high up on mine.
Now Wal-Mart Greeters that's a different story :D:D:D

I was not referring to the original post. I was making reference to the person calling those carrying openly as idiots. If he does not want to carry openly, then fine. But there are other law abiding people that do carry openly and they are not out to attract attention or create problems and they are not idiots.

I think that identifying yourself to a police officer is prudent. A local man was arrested yesterday because he reused to give his name. Once in custody and printed, it was learned he had 12 warrants for burglarly. I do not mind giving my name when asked.

The guy in the video was asking for trouble by not giving his name but he was on good on his allowing the gun to be taken, examined and such. I also doubt the wisdom of one video taping the events. The officer handled it well.

It's early, I'm only on my second coffee, and I'm not a genius.... but I'm pretty sure he's referring to the YouTube jerks in the video?

The only open carry state I've lived in was Arizona. Nobody seemed too concerned about people wandering around with guns there.

Oldman45, you crack me up. :D

In Maine OC is legal, but in the last few years since I have gotten back into shooting, I have only seen 2 people OC'ing besides Police Officers. No-one seemed to question it, so that was encouraging.

I'm with the Cajun(s). Don't be a jerk to cops doing their job. It's tough enough for them. Don't p i s s em off. Then they will FIND a reason to give you a ride.
"I don't have ID"? Really? These Open Carry nuts are trying to be a pain. Sorry folks. The guy that had to leave his coffee and donut to get cold to deal with your c r ap isn't eroding your rights, he's doing his job. Don't hassle the ground pounders.

Now this is what I was referring to earlier. I would agree the guy on the video was looking for trouble due to carrying openly in an anti gun area, not having identification and refusing to give his last name.

Yet does that make all OC people nuts? Are they trying to be a pain? They are only carrying the way they want, legally.
