Police Officer Caught on Camera Doing It Right

Unloaded Open Carry is kind of a hot topic in the People's Republik. Personally, I don't think it's a great idea. Gangbangers don't worry about permits and they do NOT open carry and their weapons are NOT unloaded. IMO it attracts unwanted attention from both sides.

LOC is another matter entirely. I would love to see it legal in Kalifornia but I'm not gonna hold my breath. :(

Surprisingly, a large percentage of PRK LEO have no idea that UOC is legal and some have been filmed going a bit berserk encountering it. Of course, many of the UOC people carry to make a point and WANT to attract attention. IMO a lot of them are misguided souls that deliberately bait the cops and catch it on film. But.... it does show pretty clearly that some Rambos are slipping through the psych screening. Being a cop in a Free Society is a tough job. It's not for everybody.

I'd buy that cop a COUPLE of beers. ;)

I am sympathetic to the OC crowd, and it does not bother me at all. But I do think it kinda funny that the guy goes out of his way, e.g., refusing to fully identify himself, to provoke the cop, but the cop just isn't goin' for it. :)

Good cop.

Cheers for the Officer. While I support the right to OC; the guy in this was a jerk. The Officer really handled it well and did a great job.

Seriously, if you are one of the OC guys that troll the cops with a camera to get material for your youtube; get a life. That just makes all people who carry look horrible.

Now that was handled professionally. I think that officer would of acted that way if he was being recorded or not.

The subject was asking for problems .... I dunno why you would carry an unloaded firearm unless you were trying to look tough and asking for problems.

It's my understanding that in California you can open carry as long as the gun is empty, but you can have loaded magazines with you too. If the choice is to carry no gun at all, or carry an empty gun along with loaded mags... what would you choose?

Here's a video of what's going on. There seems to be a growing movement for open carry where concealed carry is illegal or very difficult to obtain a license. The guy with the gun was in the middle of an interview with the media when the police show up-- 4 cars and one cop with a rifle in hand. The police are put in a tough spot because they're getting hysterical 911 calls regarding folks legally carrying.

The officer is a credit to his department and his profession.

+1. I totally agree.

The times change. I can remember a time when the Oceanside PD wasn't so "nice and professional" especially to Marines and Navy personnel.

However, I believe that the knucklehead who took this video (not the cops...who I believe would've probably handled this much differently had it not been recorded) was deliberately trying to provoke the cops into doing something. Luckily, the cops were professionals about it. I think about 50 miles north of Oceanside or 50 miles south of it, the cops would've had this guy face down on the pavement at gunpoint.

His "40 caliber Smith and Wesson" looked more to me like a Hi-Point!

So is Unloaded Open Carry an option for those of us that have to visit the state? What's involved with unloaded open carry in a vehicle?

That guy in the video that was saying there are no cowboys and indians was fooling himself. It's now much worse; they've all been replaced by nutcases and gangbangers.

I have a buddy in Southern California who has a beautifully restored 1944 Willys army jeep, complete with a replica .30 cal M-1919. Everytime he drives it the Sheriff's Office gets hysterical calls about a maniac with a machine gun. He's never actually been stopped, apparently LASO is sharp enough figure it out. I told my buddy that here people would be calling the Sheriff's office to ask if they knew where they could get one.

I believe so, but be prepared for being detained & questioned, or even having your firearm confiscated. Many cops are ignorant of the law and others will hassle you because they can.

One upside to the UOC "militants" is that more people will be educated, I suppose.

I spent a year going to school in North Phoenix and worked graveyards at the Deer Valley Circle K. After being freaked for a while I kinda liked the idea of loaded open carry.

What's involved with unloaded open carry in a vehicle?

I'm not 100% certain on that. I know we have "gun free safe zones" and I believe you would be in violation if you drove through one.

I just avoid the worry & let the unloaded guns ride to the range in a locked container separated from the ammo per CA law.

Legal, right or whatever I would not like to have an unloaded gun on the seat if I ever got pulled over.

if this was legal why did he even stop the guy?

Exactly!!! Just because the po was polite, doesn't mean it went well. If the po did not see anything illegal, why initiate a stop in the first place. The way most OC encounters should go with a police officer, are passing by each other and saying "nice day".

Because they received a call about a man on the street with a gun. It's their job.

This guy posts these to try and get negative reactions from the police. From his other videos it is obvious that he has a strong dislike for them. Just a waste of everybody's time, especially the police who have more important things to do than help this bonehead stroke his ego over his YouTube police baitings.

Eh, kind of. If it's perfectly legal to be on the street with a gun, then there isn't anything to investigate, unless the reporting party says the person was threatening or brandishing or doing something else suspicious. It's like getting a call about a guy on the street wearing a red shirt, or eating a hot dog.

Around here, the 9-1-1 operator would likely ask the reporting party WHAT the person was doing. If the caller said, "Just walking down the street wearing a gun on his hip," the operator would simply explain that it's legal to do so, and that usually would be the end of it.

A lot of the open carry folks in California are simply trying to get the state to adopt a reasonable concealed carry option similar to many other states. Whether this is an effective way to achieve the goal is certainly debatable. Having said this, I'm no fan of the guys that do this to get a rise out of the cops; they're often guys who act like jerks and crave attention -- the 2nd Amendment is really just a convenient prop. On the other hand, the people who simply open carry while having a latte at an outdoor cafe I've got no problem with, even if they video and are trying to make a point, as long as they are polite about it.

Depends on the county. Our Sheriff is an anti gun political appointee who got elected last election because sheeple vote for the incumbant. Unless you are an elected official or an annoying right wing radio talk show host you ain't be needin' no concealed carry permit in San Diego. :(

Lots of us have QUIETLY and LEGALLY had our guns within arms reach for all our lives, utilizing various 'exceptions' to the concealed and loaded gun laws. Folks who imagine that they have to be totally disarmed in this state, haven't done their homework....so more fool them!

The last thing we need is these open carry bozos getting all gun owners a lot of unwanted attention! Those who feel they need to parade around flaunting their guns under everybody's noses, are just idiots. The guy in the video, was clearly baiting the cops. To their credit, they didn't fall for it. This doesn't help anyone.

And yes.....my personal experience as a young man was that Oceanside cops were never ever that polite!!!
