Polish

Flitz is a finely ground abrasive. The black your rag when using it on stainless is steel. I wouldn't dream of using it on a blued gun.

To begin with...you really can't POLISH a blued gun. The finish you have is what you have. I only use Renaissance Wax on mine and it will add a slight gloss to a blued gun with a satin blue finish.

The "polish" on a blued surface is almost completely dependent on the polishing done to the base metal before the bluing process was even carried out.

Yes....it will remove the blued finish which is a layer on top of the steel surface.
You can clean the blued surface if careful but by the time you get to polishing the steel....the blue has been removed.

Treat blued finishes with a bit of TLC.

I cleaned the finish of the blued model 58 in my avatar , carried by a motor cycle police office friend for 20 years in the Louisiana heat, humidity and rain we have ...lots of thin surface rust and oil/dirt grunge ...with Turtle Wax Chrome Polish and Rust Remover , being very careful to only remove rust and grunge and stopping when I got down to the blued finish . It turned out very nice after a good wax job was applied .

Thank you guys for answering. I think "waxed" to protect the finish is what I am looking to accomplish. I have heard of Renaissance wax in the past. I will look to purchase some of that.

Clean off all the rust and grime and then wax....Excellent Plan !

I'm a old muscle car guy... and when I cleaned my model 58 and waxed it I simply used what I had on hand . Turtle Wax Chrome Polish and Rust Remover and Mothers Pure Carnauba Paste Wax .
I'm sure the Renaissance wax is better but if Mothers is all you have ... it will not damage the finish.
Post some before and after pictures if you can .... I enjoy seeing rescues !
