Just felt like asking this before I did my mother's shield because I was not sure if the current components were treated and how polishing will affect it long term.

Short answer: No….
After my Apex Trigger install I polished all my metal to metal parts inside my shield and have had absolutely zero sign of rust or any problem for that matter…

Agreed, most of those parts you would polish don't have a finish on them anyways. I polished my trigger bar, sear, the small plunger under the sear, striker blocker, and part of my firing pin. All where with out a finish.

Can't answer on M&P as I've only owned mine since April. My first Glock was 97 with plenty more afterward. No rust or adverse affects of sandpaper trigger job. Glock doesn't treat the internals you smooth out so I'd say S&W good to go as well.
