Posting picture with serial number?

I've seen some pictures posted where the person will either cover or blur the serial number of the gun in the photo. Just wondering if this something that needs to be done. What is the danger of someone else knowing your serial number? Just wondering if I should take the extra step before I post some pictures. Thanks for any info.

The topic has been covered many times. It's not necessary, but do whatever you're comfortable with. I don't worry about it since we have handgun registration in my State anyway.

I would never post the serial number.

Also when I drive my car I cover up the license plate, no reason to let anyone have too much information about me.
