I have tried to appreciate a full flap holster's crud and weather protection. as well as naked security of single action hoster's hammer loop. If holster's flap were not so interfering during draw as well as pistol's holstering, requiring two hands and total diversion of attention, it seems to solve the problem.

If my single action holster's hammer loop were enlarged as though it were a very flexible leather "pancake", moderate
crud and weather protection while retaining security of hammer loop seems to solve the problem.

If the securing flap or pancake were fastened to holster body to be able to be moved out of the way, for example like movable snap-fastening safety straps on many police holsters during the heyday of medium sized double action revolvers, this either resolves my preferred pouch holster or comes very close.

The handguns for which I seek such a holster are FA Model 97s, single action revolvers slightly smaller than a Colt SAA having the same barrel length. I suspect that my 7X Leather pouch holsters could be adapted without significant difficulty. Whether any holster maker would work on someone else's work is problematic.

Is a leather holster with a convenient half flap available? Or, perhaps, are there holster makers willing and able to make such a holster?

Lawrence made a 1/2 flap holster that was popular but I’m not sure it answers your questions. A fellow SWCA member and good friend gave me a unique convertible flap holster, a good design but I’ve only seen the one I have so it must not have caught on. Interesting thoughts, thanks for posting.

Regards,

Too much "exposition" in OP.

1) Visualize a circa 1980s highway patrolman using an open top holster with safety strap (not thumb-break). While remaining attached to holster, strap can be unsnapped from outside female snap fastener, pivoted forward to free its handgun restraint, and resnap to fix strap away from handgun's hammer. Rather than the strap being narrow enough to act behind the hammer (Bianchi #1 Lawman), half-flap covers and interferes with hammer nose while covering top 35–40%, including hammer, hammer's pivot pin plus cylinder cut-out area. So while exterior (rear) of revolver's lockwork is covered by movable flap, flap can pivot forward and snap-fastened rendering holster an open-top pouch holster.

2) Open-top single action pouch holster replaces hammer loop safety with much larger piece of relatively thick but flexible. Strip is "looped" over hammer spur. When looped, the strip or "pancake" of flexible leather covers top 30–35%, including hammer, hammer's pivot pin plus cylinder cut-out area. It is moved from its position as safety (and weather cover) in the same conventional single action hammer loop disconnecting motion — up, forward, and over.

Of these two possibilities, number one seems to be better. Number two seems to be adaptable to my existing single action open-top pouch holsters if a leather worker would be willing to try it. I guess in the event of failure, this can revert to original hammer loop.
