I know powders can be used for many calibers...but I just bought 3 1 pound cans of Winchester Action Pistol..$5 pound. What would be the best cals to use it in?? I mean...the price WAS right but...Someone here must have used it for something....I also got 8 pounds of 231...same price. I've never used AP but have the idea it may be good for 9mm 40 S&W etc... which I don't load

I don't know what calibers you plan on but W231 is great stuff for those calibers. Loads are listed online everywhere so you ought to buy components accordingly. No idea about the other stuff.

Search around for Winchester Action Pistol. Supposedly Winchester discontinued it, sold it off to Ramshot, and it's now called Silhouette. I would contact Hodgdon since they own both Winchester and Ramshot.

There's a powder called Winchester Auto Comp. May/may not be WAP renamed, down near HS6 on the burn chart. As is Ramshot Silhouette. Contacting Hodgdon is a good idea.

ETA: after poking about the web for awhile, WAP was designed to maximize compensator performance, I expect Auto Comp to do the same, but they're not the same. Newer Silhouette data is slightly different in burn rate from original WAP/Silhouette in some calibers.

Ok...I may have confused Action Pistol and Auto Comp. . Most of my reloading in the past was shotgun...Since I had the Hercules/Alliant powders that is what I tended to use in handgun. I do use 231 and like it for many handgun rounds...up to a little hotter than middle of the road uses. I had to buy the AP with the rest of the stuff or let it all get away. Got the powder and a RCBS A2(Bigger than a Rock Chucker) press In the parking lot of the gun show. All the powder as in the older Winchester metal cans. The A2 didn't have a handle but I have an extra in the grudge... I'll probably just sell the AP cheap or give it away. If it was Win540/HS-6 I'd use it in 28 ga

You need to find Winchester Loading Data .
WAP is Winchester Action Pistol ... you want loading data for WAP , don't try to guess how much powder to use .
I don't use Winchester Powders so don't have any data ...
I did a search on Winchester Powders Loading Data and the Hodgdon Reloading Center came up ... try Hodgdon Powder Company – The Brand Thats True
Go to their Load Data Center and see if you can find info .
You made a great buy ... good luck finding data .

Well never shot any action pistol games. My Dillon 1050 has always used 231 in 45 auto..have no 40s 10mms 357 Sigs or anything so as I said I'll probably sell it cheap give it to so deserving reloader or throw it out. I have lots of older powder out in the magazine. I'll find some of the old Winchester free loading manuals they gave away... Win DCd a lot of great powders

I haven't seen any of the WAP powder in a long time, but I used to use it in the 40 S&W with 180 grain bullets and in the 45 ACP with 230 grain bullets. It worked just fine in both.

Get these 2 things. Then you’ll be the one answering questions, after you tell the inquirer to buy a Garmin Xero and a reloading munual.

I did some searching on line last night...Found lots of data on all kinds of powders I have.... The usual suspects of course from Hercules (RL7,10.11.12 21) Dupont( P-5, 6.5066,Hi Skor, PB etc etc) Alcan 5,7,8 and other imports and of course Winchester( 230,295, 452,473 540 680 and a host of others. I found some data for the Action Pistol too. Called a fellow locally that shoots a fair amount of pistol and he bought all 3 pounds for 20 bucks...hey he offered 25...

WAP is a great powder for the 38 SUPER cartridge

I bought about 10 pounds of it when it first came out but naturally that has long gone away out of my inventory

As mentioned above WAP became Ramshot Silhouette. Are the exact same powder produced in the exact same factory

So if you want to use it, the Ramshot Silhouette data is 100 percent exchangeable with WAP data

I inherited most of a 12 lb container of W A P. I use it in 40 S&W, 38 special, 9mm, 45 acp and wish I had more calibers to shoot it in. I have the Western Powders loadbook from before Hornaday bought them. It has more info than Hornaday has online. It seems like Western was thinking it had applications in revolvers, but Hornaday wants to have it in auto pistols only.

As I said above I decided to send it down the road..I haven't loaded 38 Super since the early 70s don't have 10s or 40s thank goodness and don't load the 9mm...With 8 pounds of 231 I think I have 'nuff powder for the 38/357 and 45 auto for a while.... like 10,000 rounds...and I have more 231 in the loading benches and maybe the predecessor to it..Win 230 with about 4 pounds..One thing I really didn't like about AP...the loads listed were max and not recommended to go down with them... Win had a lot of powders listed that way
