I aquired reloading equipment in a trade deal and was wondering if there is a powder that is well suited for both 9mm and .38/.357. I mainly shoot for recreational purposes.

If you can find them - Bullseye or Winchester 231.

A classic .38 target load is 2.7 gr of Bullseye under a 148 gr Speer HBWC.

In general, 231, HP38, Unique, Universal, Accurate #5, HS6, maybe even Power Pistol. Some of these will get you standard up through +P 38 loads, standard to full power 9mm, and mid-range 357 loads. Full power 357 requires slower powders like 2400, Accurate #9, 296, H110 etc. Those slower powders are only good for magnum loads and have no use in 38 or 9mm.

What bullet weights are you trying to load for?

I have found these powders to be useful in 9 mm , 38 special and 357 magnum.
700X
Bullseye
Red Dot
231
HP38
Unique
Universal.
These days, which powder you use is more dependent on which powder you can beg, borrow, buy, find or steal than what powder you would like to use. Times is tough finding pistol powder.

Make a list. This is a good start. As Gary says, you take what you can find. May not be the best, but it's what you can find that counts.

Blue Dot also runs real well in 9 MM, 38 Special +P w/158 grain X-Treme PFP, 357 Mag (except 125 grain bullets) and light bullet 44 Mag.

The 38 Special +P loads are the only ones I've found so far that will run in my 1911 style Coonan Classic in 38 Special bullets, which shoots 38 Special and 357 Magnum.
