As I remember, they instruction call out a dial indicator but it seems like it is no longer available.
I don't really think the exact one is that important, just one that will both fit and be accurate.

There are some YouTube videos on how to use this.
They seem pretty clear to me.
 
Thank you Stu - you got to the instructions before I did. I also use a magnetic base for the dial indicator. Since all I'm looking for is runout, I don't even bother to zero the indicator....I just look at the high and low readings and keep tweaking the rod until those readings are less than .003" apart.

It takes much less pressure on the bending handle than you think it will.

I bought a small Mitutoyo dial indicator to use with the tool but soon found that it was much more convenient to use my magnetic base dial indicator holder on the base of the tool and a regular large size dial in the normal reading position instead of upside down as the original is set up.

Mag base is how I set mine up as well, convenient with the large steel surface.
