PPU and Tulammo ammo range report.

Went to the range with my best friend marty the 12th. We decided to venture out of our comfort zones and get ammo that we never shot before. Marty went with this PPU blue box in the 9mm that we have never used and i went with Tulammo 9mm that we never used either.

i have heard both negative and positive about Tulammo but with that said have never shot a round of the stuff. Marty and i never even seen this PPU ammo in walmart before but the cute girl at the counter said they just got it in but havent found a place in the shelf for it yet. We loaded up with 200 rounds of each and 400 rounds of 12g birdshot and off we went.

We took our time shooting shotgun as we like to enjoy the day and just have fun trying to out shoot one another. After we eat all the shotgun ammo we began trying this new to us ammo. The guns we shot were, Kel tec p11, SW9VE, glock 19 and the baby glock 26, M&P 9c and Kahr PM9.

To our surprise we went through all 400 rounds of 9mm and had 0 problems, well actually we did have a problem with the Kel tec P11 slide going back to battery after the last shot was fired(not staying open). What really surprised me about Tulammo was that its not as dirty as ive been told or read online. Couldnt tell any diffence as far as the gun being any more dirty then when using other brands of ammo. I had no problems with the ammo and will use again as they both are a cheap option for the range

Anyways just wanted to share my 2 cents worth with you guys on my first time experience with PPU and Tulammo.

Yep! Tula/Wolf/Bear is alright ammo for plinking or practice. PPU is actually very good. Some of it is higher powered and some under powered, depending on caliber, kinda weird. Like their 8mm Mauser is higher powered then whats is offered here by commercial ammo makers. However their 10mm is underpowered and is closer to a 40s&w. Their 7.62NATO and 5.56, both in white box, are identical to milspec US ammo. Their brass is pretty good. From what I've read the and IMI supply a lot of 5.56 to US troops.Wolf Gold is PPU/Made by PPU. But what I really LOVE about PPU is their ability to let me shoot rifles that I like but wouldnt be able to afford the ammo for. Anywhere from $13-$17 get you 303Brit, 8mm Mauser, 8x56R, 8mm Label, 7.92 Krutz, 7x57 Mauser, even 3006, 3030, and many other US calibers.

Thanks Arik! i did not know that about PPU, actually the only thing i knew about it was when Marty and i shot it it performed well and had 0 problems with it. Its made out of the states isnt it Serbia?

Mrs. Tops got a box of Tula for her BG380 and 2 of the 50 snaped on the first try but she pulled the trigger again and both fired. She has shot about 800 times with PMC, American Eagle and Winchester and never had another misfire. Larry

TOPS- Wolf uses hard primers similar to milsurp. I occasionally have to do a second strike with my Glock 17/19. Even had one with an AK.

Never shot the PPU. I have shot a pile of Tula in 9mm and .45 ACP. I have also shot a pile of Wolf 5.55mm in single-shot and COLT Hbar rifles. In every respect the ammunition has been excellent. It has given perfect function in every firearm used. It has given on target results fully equivalent to similar ball ammunition produced by domestic manufacturers. It has also been more economical to use. An added advantage is that when shooting at a range where one is not allowed to recover brass, the steel cases can simply be allowed to fly away! Cool.

My R1 loves the PPU. Monarch from Academy. It's not as cheap as the Tula, but I have to use brass at the indoor range.

Being a military surplus shooter for well over 35 years now. Many years ago its been posted that the russian barnaul ammo was the best quality/accurate ammo.

So far i have shot;

Priv-Patrizan ammo 1++++ great brass for reloading

Sellier & Bellot 1++++ Its the imported ammo thats loaded to specs like the 7mm & 8MM mauser ect. Very accurate too. This is tops for hunting. The yugo brass is quality brass.

Wolf Gold 1++++ Its really PPU ammo in a wolf box

Wolf ammo 1++++ in 223 & 7,62x39 steel cased its awesome shooting it in my saiga's.

Tula ammo 1++++ Its good affordable ammo.

Russian golden bear, silver bear, brown bear. It seems to be also good stuff too.

I never shot the russian tiger ammo yet but i heard its ok too.

The very first batches of russian wolf ammo was very dirty and smelly too. But it always went bang. Now they use a much better quality gun powder.

The chinese norinco is very good too and accurate if you can find any. I squirreled away some before the import stopped.

Steel cased ammo; In WW2 the USA actually used/issued steel cased ammo in 45acp. I shoot alot of steel cased ammo mainly in my chrome lined bores and chambers. The steel cases are coated so they cushion the chambering.

Warning, note; When reloading for a semi auto rifle that has a floating firing pin make sure the bolt carrier is free from dirt and cosmoline and the firing pin is installed dry. I only use the thicker walled nato primers, CCI 34# in the large rifles. Also the nato primers are a tad hotter there about equal to 1 1/2 times hotter in the powder charge over the normal standard rifle primers. Remember to add 1 1/2 to the grains in your total powder charge for the hotter primer. You need to lower the powder charge by 1 1/2 grains.

Last spring I was at the Ohio state range at Woodbury. A Family of 3 were shooting on the 200 yard range, the father was shooting a stainless Savage sporter in 223 with Tula steal cased ammo, with small scope and rest. He was shooting about 12-14 inches. THE Mother was shooting a Savage stainless 22 with scope and Federal Champion ammo and doing about 8 inches. The High School aged daughter was shooting a Savage Stainless 22, iron sights, and Fed. Champion 22 ammo. She was shooting nice round groups about 2 inches in diameter. I talked to the Dad about getting his Daughter on a rifle team and taking lessons from her!

I like PPU ammo and its very good re-loadable brass. Their .38 Special 158 grain LRN is extremely accurate practice ammo. My old Savage 340 carbine in 222 Remington shoots PPU 55 grain into 1 to 1.5 inch 100 yard groups which is better than any other factory ammo. My weak handloads can do better, but they are much lower velocity than the PPU.

Tula 45 ACP and 9 MM Luger work well in any pistol I've shot the stuff through.

Tried some Tula .380 ACP and had issues with large amounts of unburned powder quickly fouling my pistol.

Other than..Once a case hits the ground it's theirs...and they resell the brass?

Usually when a range doesnt allow steel case is becasue they cant reload it, my range reloads it and also just sells the casings as is. Dont really go there much. Plus it cost a lot to shoot there, 16 dollars per hour, bring a guest? ya at 8 dollars per hour. Could already have bough me atleast 100 rounds of 9mm with that.

Now that the Yugo 8mm and 7.62x54R is dried up PRVI is also about the only source for non steel in those calibers as well.

Someone mentioned paying by the hour. I went to such a range locally that allows steel ammo. Wound up paying as much to shoot my Mosin as I would have just buying a couple boxes of PRVI and shooting at the range I usually go to, especially figuring I would have 40 pieces of once fired Boxer primed x54R brass. Wouldn't be cleaning up after corrosive primers either.

I used the Wolf steel cased stuff in my AR. I think they use a "dirty" powder and the steel cases don't seal against the chamber as well as brass does. I recommend you clean the AR chamber well with a special chamber brush before you switch back to brass cased. Do not mix these or you will likely get a stuck case. Some pistol manufacturers specify no steel cased ammo.

US steel cased ammo, headsamped EC or ECS, usually '42 or '43, is hard on 45 extractors. We shot it on an Army pistol team and it would break a GI extractor in about 1500-2000 rounds. The hook on the extractor, the part that actually pulls the case backwards, would break off. Unless you're shooting an awful lot of 45, this isn't a factor.

PPU Ammo

I buy fired hulls from my gun club by the pound; so cheap I'm almost ashamed--not. This last five pounds of 45 acp had a lot of PPU brass hulls in it. I clean and polish my brass and then let my Dillon deprime as I reload. PPU is good brass but it can be a stinker to deprime. I cannot see a staking ring like our mil brass but many times my deprime pin pierces or just deforms the original primer, thus hanging up my press. The primer is hard and in there very tight. I now sort and deprime the ppu with a rockchucker and it reloads with no issue. I have not purchased an new ppu but the brass is fine.

If the steel cased 45 acp ammo just maybe hotter ammo which could cause a harder extraction we may need a stronger recoil spring to compensate for it. I use the FLGR KITS in all my 1911's with the 18# recoil spring. I did tune my detractors and funnel the extractor mouths per the specs on the 1911 forum.

In the past the Russian manufactured barnaul brand was very accurate I believe it's called golden bear, silver bear and brown bear. I gave some 223
Harmful soft point to my buddy so his son could hunt. The kid found the Russian barnaul ammo to be very accurate. He shot a deer with it.

The PPU ammo is manufactured in former Yugoslavia. The brass is very good for reloading.

I have a affordable Lee single stage press just for decapping. Then I clean the primer pockets then polish and resize. I then run them through the progressive press to load.

Both good ammo, good brass for reloading.
