Pre-1980s 3” K-frames?

It seems like all of the 3" K-frame revolvers I've seen were produced post 1970s.

Were there any produced prior to 1980?

Yes, there were 3" heavy (not bull) barrel model 10s made in the 10-4, 5 and 7 variants in the 1960s and '70s. I seem to recall these also being produced in the 1950s also, and if so someone here will post a photo of one.

I have a 3" model 10 supposedly special ordered by a Deputy Sheriff in 1961 according to the description in the Estate Sale Brochure. Super smooth action I feel sure came from years of shooting. Still tight and shoots like a new gun.

They made heavy barrel and standard barrel versions, but I wouldn't consider the 3" standard barrel as "pencil", it's just not heavy.

I have two. A 10-4 from 1967 and 10-5 from 1975. Both are taper barrels with a square butt.

I was in Thailand 1974-1975.
Many Thai Police were carrying issued Model 10s with square butt and 3" barrel.

Yup, the only difference in those two engineering changes is the width of the front sight. The -4 had the 1/10" wide front sight (like the other earlier versions), while the -5 (and all subsequent engineering changes) has the 1/8" wide front sight.

A non-model marked M&P .38 3" that according to S&W Historian Roy Jinks was shipped in 1958. Standard, or 'tapered' barrels are not as evident and obvious in the 3" versions.
This one came into an LGS where I was working a p/t retirement job. Had been traded in the previous day by a young man desiring a Glock. I got no back-story. Boss made me shuck out $150 for the "old M10".
Someone had done a fine job of polishing all the grooves out of the standard service trigger.
It now wears correct SB diamond magnas and a BK adapter.
Gets CC'ed quite a bit.
