What is your intent with it? If it is re blued, the collector interest is gone. If you want a shooter of this vintage, well then I believe it is well priced and I would now be tying to post photos of it. Is there any "wiggle room"in it? Always ask... Kyle

Looks like a very nice shooter.

As I am not a collector, if I wanted an early clean 28,
that would fill the bill.
450-500 is a fair price for that condition IMO ;)

It is a Pre 28. Highway Patrolman. See the Barrel and the Matte Finish. Not a pre 27.

700 Is too high for a Reblued Pre 28. Hammer and trigger also wrong.

I'd at least look at it if were fairly close by as a nice 5 screw 28 would sure be something I'd like to add . That side plate looks untouched and stocks look nice. Can't tell if the case colors are washed out by a flash or how crisp the stamping is, but I'd get some better pictures at minimum. Seller may have been given some bad info. since a 28 from it's profile sure looks like a 27 with an improper re-blue.

I agree. It looks like a very clean Highway Patrolman. And as a pre-28 that makes it worth a good deal more than the $350 someone suggested above. Might approach the asking $700 according to what I've seen on the auction sites.

The 6" barreled highway patrolman have averaged $695 lately. The 4" in unmolested condition may bring a equal or a tad higher cost.
The 4" barreled m28 & m27' s are more sought after?
I think the m28 is more sought after right now.

Does that grip thing lessen the value?

Come on guys the prices are getting higher.

The things that impact the value on this gun are the reblue and the polishing/modifications that were done to the hammer and trigger. 400 would be a good deal for any Nframe in my area. 700 would get a very nearly new 28-2. Pre-28s command a little more, but not much.

I question if the gun was re-blued. The seller may well have called it a re-blue because he thought it was a pre-27 and a re-blue would explain the mat blue finish. The rounded and smoothed trigger makes me think this gun had a action/trigger job done and if it was well done, may not detract value except for true collectors.

Just sayin',

Dave, this could be one possible scenario. The seller says that he "thinks" it was reblued and was somewhat surprised when i suggested that is was probably a 28 or pre 28. He said he was told it was a pre 27. He is sending me some additional pictures for a closer look. He about 60 miles away, so Im not ready for a FTF yet.

Sounds like a confused seller........ lot of those out there......especially with non-numbered guns......looks like a "road trip" is in order.....about the only way you will get what information and visuals you need.......especially to establish a fair price..... and maybe with a little education you can get a good price.

To a non collector/enthusiast ...doing minimal research if any.... a pre 28 and 27 are the same gun......

I'll put a $5 bet on a nice 5 screw HP...hammer and trigger are wild cards!

The pictures are not very good, but I do not see any signs of a reblue on the sideplate line or screw holes, which to me are the big tell tale indicators. Hard to tell about the logo. The cylinder does not look rounded, either. If it was reblued, someone did a really good job.
Check the end of the extractor rod to see if it is in the white. Nice looking old gun. I would want to check that one over very carefully before passing it by.

If it's not a reblue then it is in very good shape! I wouldn't let the hammer and trigger stop me from getting it, as they can be replaced with the correct parts. I would use it as a negotiating point though, and try to get him down to 6 bills.

I was able to blow the pics up and it clearly says " 357 Mag Ctg Highway Patrolman" on the barrel. However, I have no idea what it's worth.

Oops, I just saw where someone else already posted the info. I'll bow out now!

Vinny, have you seen the serial number yet? Not that it would make a difference in the pre-27/28 discussion. It looks like a nice Highway Patrolman that had its case colors polished off by some crazy person. Pictures of the top of the gun would be helpful. Good luck on that gun.

Okay price if original finish but about $300 high if it's a re-blue.

vinny - another thing that will firm up what frame it is.........
- a pre 27 frame has a checkered topstrap and adj sight.
- a pre 28 frame has a smooth topstrap and adj. sight.

Mike,

Take a close look at the photos in the OP. I don't see any sign of checkering on the edges of the top strap.

ser#S103959. this guy gets back to me about every other day(?).
I dont know where I stand on this.

I agree with the guys above, strongly doubt it's a 'reblue' and is definitely a 'pre-28' nice gun really, at $700 , that is the top of the food chain, at least around here.................you need to 'FTF' ,check under the right grip panel for serial number 'match' and as noted above, the hammer ,trigger NOT a 'big deal"..........looks like a typical, old cops gun, with very little wear ( as for use, you GOTTA look deeper)
you say he's "asking",,,,,,, make him an offer.

That is a very early Highway Patrolman. I'm guessing first month of production. I.A.W. SCSW they began at S 103500. Good luck.
Thanks, communication with this guy is like using dial up. He is supposed to be sending me some additional photos. when i get em, I'll post em.
