Hi I picked up this 6" Pre 27 last year. I might consider trading or selling it and I am trying to determine a fair value. The serial # is S 157165. I consider it to be in about 95% condition. It does have slight turn line, and faint muzzle wear and a couple of very small scratches. Any help would be appreciated. This one locks up tight as a vault. No box or papers Thanks.

Short answer: $1200

Edit: After reconsidering the front sight I am more in agreement with other opinions of a value closer to $1000. Regardless it's a beautiful gun.

Very nice gun and I love the diamond Target Stocks. Generally the front sight on the 6" barreled 357s was a Patridge sight. I cannot tell that well from the photos, but it almost looks like your front sight was a Patridge sight that someone has nicely modified to have more of a Baughman profile (but it appears a little abrupt on the rear face, where the Baughman tapers all the way to the sight base and is serrated across the rear face).

If the sight is correct, I agree that the value is in the low $1K range. If the sight is modified, then the value is a little less.

We would love to see some more photos, and a couple of the front sight profile would be helpful.

My only pre-27 is also a 6" and yes it has the Patridge sight. I paid around $800 for this one a couple years ago, but think I got a good deal, especially with the Coke stocks (3rd from the left in the pic below). The suggested range of $1000-1200 is probably more accurate today assuming all original.

Just call me droid stupid. For some reason I get these upside down then flip them and save but they still come through upside down. Sorry for the late picture posts for some reason the droid did not work well yesterday.

I hope this helps. You guys are sharp. I never noticed the difference in the front sight post. I did the best i could with this picture. I took it beside my Pre 27 3.5 for reference.

I would value your gun around $1,500.

This site must attract cheap folks, for the low appraisals?!?!

Thank you. Still unsure. Is worth that to me though. However I had not noticed the front site until it was called to my attention. I respect all of the opinions posted above though. All these guys are sharp and pay attention to detail.

The short barreled pre-27's as stated had the baughman
style front sight (kinda' like the one on yours). The long barreled
ones were equipped with the partridge sight. So the front sight
has been changed from the way it originally left the factory.
Nice condition other than that. Can't tell if yours may have been
re-blued or not. If so that takes a little from value as well.
Like anything, originality and condition are key to determining
price on these nice old revolvers.
Yours is regardless a nice old revolver from days gone by and
there are guys out there who would give more than others.
It's all relative my friend. Keep it, shoot it, and enjoy it.

Finding a correct box and waking up just in time saved you. Keeping it is good.

I shoot mine. It is in similar condition. I actually put it in a leather device and carry it in the woods at times.

I'm sort of a rebel in that respect.

Not all 6" and longer pre 27's have the patridge sight. The pre 27's were semi custom guns in that they could be special ordered with a choice of bbl length, stocks, and any front sight available.

As a matter of fact, most (or at least 50/50) of the 6.5" barreled pre-27s that I have seen came with the Baughman ramp. I also have two or three 8.375" pre-27s with red insert Baughman ramps... HOWEVER, the vast majority of the 6" pre-27s that I recall seeing (including the 3 or 4 that I own) have had the Patridge front sight.

I might carry it to the Greensboro gun show? Let someone who knows more than me look it over. I appreciate the comments though. If the front sight was modified it was done by someone who knows what they were doing. If reblued I sure cannot tell. It looks original to me. I paid a grand for it. I am a sucker for five screw guns. :) However I do see the difference. From the pictures above. So it probably has been modified. Thanks for the knowledge guys.
