Pre-Model 10??

Hello everyone. I'm trying to figure out which model I have. I've searched a lot of pictures and this one looks a lot like a pre-model 10 but the serial number isn't right because it doesn't have a letter prefix. The serial is 6788**. I'll post some pics. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!!

Welcome to the Forum.

You have a .38 Military & Police from the 1930s. Model numbers weren't assigned by S&W until 1957. The M&P was changed in 1948 to a short action. These short action M&Ps are considered by collectors to be pre Model 10s. I would put a value of at least $450 on your revolver.

6788xx would make a 1940 (probably early 1940) shipment very likely, and the grips appear to be correct. If it is in .38 Special, it was a civilian M&P. As previously stated it is too early to be called a pre-Model 10. Civilian M&Ps from 1940 are uncommon as after about mid-year, virtually all of S&W's revolver production was going to the British Commonwealth, not to U. S. civilian customers, what with Dunkirk and the fall of France.

Interestingly the M&P and K-22 OD serials are co mingled in that era.
