I make presentation cases out of old fine wood silverware cases. Usually pay no more than 10 bucks. I use them for special revolvers, usually matched sets.
I would pay 10 bucks (I'm not offering here) for such a case. So, that's MY market. But, YMMV.

GypsmJim, I’d be interested to see pics. I recently came into an old silverware box and had that thought too.
People collect many different categories of items. Not all have appeal to us.

I got this one from "absent comrade" Hurricane Charlie at the Lakeland show maybe 10 years ago. I know it is much earlier than the 29-5 but it fits and the gun came with no box. I'ma let it be. Joe
There is, indeed, a lot of interest in the factory presentation cases. There is a member on this forum who has perfected manufacturing replacement liners for the factory cases. A link is provided below and I seem to recall he is making liners for most n-frame barrel lengths. Worth checking these out to restore your case to near original configuration and increase its value for your use or for sale.

Member, jcelect, also makes new liners for the cases, and they are very nice.
I have a couple of them, not great condition, but could be refinished (if you are so talented), and I'd give them away free. Just pay shipping.

I bought a wooden case at a local flea market and repurposed it to hold a Colt Ace conversion kit. I bought wood strips at Hobby Lobby and green felt at Walmart, and got a Colt applique sticker off eBay.

djohns6: The vintage S&W mahogany presentation cases definitely have value, upwards of $200+ depending upon condition. Was the exterior of the box maintained? Are hinges and clasps in good shape? What type of inserts (plastic or foam or both) and lining? To the best of my knowledge these cases were only supplied with N-frame revolvers, so it makes sense that if you had a Model 27 this was its case. As stated above, Joe (jcelect) is our resident expert craftsman for refurbishing presentation cases...he does outstanding work at fair prices. You can PM him if you're interested.
The thing I don't like about S&W display boxes is they make a lousy display with the lid closed. They just look like a wooden box. The guns I have on display are in Meadow's glass top cases. You can see the guns and they are protected. Meadow's always have their stuff at The Blade Show here in Atlanta and I usually pick up one or two every year. It's pretty handy. I can choose the ones I want and there is no shipping.
