hey all,

Ok so i was at a gunshop today, window shopping for a .22lr smith. I happend on a model 63-4 with the 5" barrel.

They had it priced at 699.00 the same as a brand new 63 3" barrel model.

This gun is in pretty good condition, some minor character marks here and there, other than that looks good.
Just need to know if that is what they are going for now a days, I know the new models are a bit pricey but thought for a used gun they could do better.

I just dont know if Id rather have the 3 or 5 anyway, I have more than enough .22's but ammo prices what they are its nice to have something I can shoot all day with out taking out a loan.

BTW they had a very nice used mod 22 thunder ranch there, I drooled a bit then put it back 750.00 dont know if thats good, but it sure was purdy.

Thanks
Dave

They know that S&W 22s are a hot item now and they're looking to get the most out of that gun, and someone will give it to them. It would have to be in excellent condition with the box for me to pay that much. MHO.

I consider that to be too high, Dave; especially if, as has been mentioned, there is no box, tools, or papers.

My 63 (don't know the -# but I bought it new in the 80's IIRC) has a 4" barrel, and that's a nice length for "the" Kit Gun.

But the 63 is not and never will be a target pistol, so you may find that the 5" isn't what you'd like.
I'm an anti-IL guy, but for a .22 pistol, I'd go with a brand new 3" instead.
The most useful barrel lengths for the 63 are 3" and 4" because they are long enough to shoot reliably accurate (for the pistol that it is) but short enough to easily pack and carry.

I'm just saying that if you want this as a shooter, then you might end up paying "full price" for a 5" when you could pay "full price" for a 3" and probably be happier in the long run.

Methinks $699 is too high. I saw a used 63-4 last summer in a LGS for $599 and that was the starting price. It followed me home for $550. :D

Bought a new 5" in January for $500+tax at a LGS (asking price). $700 seems high to me. I could see $600. The 3" will likely be my next gun that I buy new.

thanks forthe replies, this place is generally out of whack but ocasionally they have a good deal.

ill wait and keep an eye open for something better, i d like both but may end up with a new 3"

thanks
Dave

Love my 4" bbl.M63, but longed for a M34, 2", .22 cal, RB in nickle. Found a pristine one at the last show positively NIB with all papers. In '81 (tail end of the Bangor Punta era) J-frame grips were stamped inside to match the SN as was this one. Never had a 'safe queen'....but am still debating whether to light a cap with this one.

Too high.
A used gun with "character marks" should never be within 100 bucks of the new one next to it.True, the five incher isn't currently produced, but the three incher is the one to get, imo.
Btw,not the same gun, you can also buy a brand new model 18 for about that much via Davidson's sale-so much better than a J frame.

I bought a new 4" 617 9/08 while a friend bought a new 5" 63 by year's end. Sadly, he passed away before getting to enjoy his .22 - he shot 8 rds from it, while I shot 16. I would buy it from his estate 8/09. I re-sprung it and added a HiViz sight - which hangs over a bit - then the 60 Pro grips. By Thanksgiving, last year's long awaited 3" 63 was available - I bought my pusher's first one. To be blunt, it is a great package - with just the 60 Pro grips added - it's trigger was good - broke in to be better than the 5"-er's - after all of it's work, too - go figure!

Of course, it came with the right HiViz sight, too. I will have it long after the 5"-er is gone - and it has sentimental value the 3"-er doesn't have. The 3"-er is a great package - get the wood grips, too - and the appropriate 8X speedloader and baseplate from DS-10 speedloaders - max fun with el-cheapo ammo. The balance on the 5"-er isn't bad - slightly nose heavy - but the 3'-er is a natural extension of your hand - you'll love it!
