Hello,

I have been offered a 1974 Model 27-2 with presentation box and tools for $695. I think it has a 6" barrel.

Any thoughts on the asking price??

The gun looks to be in very good condition with a faint turn line.

Thanks, rudyc

Fair price whether it is nickel or blue. If it has original Football targets and the box , tools and paperwork are in good shape......
Go for it.

I'd much rather spend that money on a quality 35 year old gun than a Grand on a Modern S&W.

How about some pictures when you buy it?

Yep, a real good price if it is in good condition.

Come on you need a modern S&W because you need something to pound in tent stakes.

Art - it's funny you reference the revolver used as a hammer. Being a grip guy and having bought a couple of junker sets over the past few years............I have found many original stocks that had indentations in the butt from hammering.
I'm sure there were many LEO's that hung a few "wanted" posters or FOP flyers

Funny you say that as I did a price look up on a late 1800's colt SA and the grips and butt were beat to crap and when I asked Glenn if he knew the history of the gun he said yes "it belonged to a family member who was a Marshall and the grips and butt were beat up because he used it to to hang wanted posters" - How Funny.

Hello I'm a newb here as well, didn't want to start a whole new thread, and had a question about value of a S&W as well.

I was just recently handed-down my Grandfather's Detroit Police service revolver. I can't find the model # on the gun but looking at the pic's in the detroit police revolver thread it looks like what someone called a 10-5. It's chrome with a 2 inch barrel and in excellent condition (he worked in records so it was likely only fired when he had to pass tests). Have all of the original paperwork....it was issued in 1967.

Anyone have an idea of it's approximate value?

If it's a model 10 when you open the cylinder and look inside at the crane (pivot point) you will see either just a 10 0r a 10-5 (say). If a 10 or 10-something isn't there it's probably a pre model 10. The serial number is on the butt of the frame and if it's covered by the grip you will need to take them off to see it.

If it was inssued in 1967 it's a model 10-5 and should have a D preceeding the serial number

I grew up in Detroit and my Dad bought a 10-5 with serial number D581XX an it shipped from S&W in Oct 1968. I guess he bought it because that was a one year after the Detroit riots in 1967 and he was brothered by all that. Anyway it's mine now has a total of 50 rounds through it.
