It has a non-pinned barrel, so it's most likely from the 80's. I'll move this to the S&W Revolvers - 1980 to Present section for you.

It's looks like there's some damage around the front sideplate screw, possibly from using a screwdriver that was too wide. It could just be dried grease, but it's worth a close inspection.

I don't know what to make of the grips. They have a speedloader cut and diamonds, which S&W didn't do.

got the gun and checked ser # it was produced in 1982 the year the pinned barrel was dropped. don't know why around the screw mentioned the bluing is a little lighter around the screw as there is no damage, very nice piece for my collection

I think the grips have been modified to add the speedloader cutout. Not unusual back in the day when you could get a set "take off" (everyone wanted rubber) target grips for $15-20.
It's not as sharp as factory.

Haven't seen one for sale in a LGS in so long wouldn't even hazard a guess at retail value.

That said IMO the 18 is the "best" of the S&W .22lr revolvers.
Nice gun!

In perfect condition with no box, I see the earlier pinned models going for $850+. With your example, I'd probably pass on anything over $550, but that's me.

Any more, I go to Gun Broker to gauge value. It may not be completely realistic, but some buyers are paying those amounts. Yours is a shooter for sure, and should entertain you fine on the range. I've got an 18 (non pinned) I bought new back in around 1986. I was young and dumb and S&W revolvers were still relatively common and affordable, so I didn't exactly keep it pristine. The rear sight was messed up from the factory, so when I finally got it to a gunsmith to repair, I also had an action job performed and had the target trigger face smoothed and radiused. I also, it a bout of stupidity managed to use lead away cloth to remove lead build-up from the cylinder face. It now sports a polished cylinder face. Its a shooter...
