A year ago, I purchased two 1950 (pre 26) pistols with cut trigger guards in the Fitz style. They were cheap as the seller was asking 600 each for the 45 acp. One is S 77405 made in 1950 to 1951 with a matte flat top rib and the entire pistol is matte like a highway patrolman. The grips number, 95 per cent finish condition with only one oddity. Smith and Wesson is on the right side of the barrel and there is nothing on the left side and its not been refinished.I saw one like this without a cut trigger guard sell on the forum almost a month ago at the asking price of $1200. The second 1950 is brite blue, grips correct but dont match and the barrel is marked Smith and Wesson on the left side and the right side is 45 cal model 1950.
This one is later S 142015 which places it at 1955. Any opinions as to value for these shooters would be greatly appreciated. These are old 5 screw pistols but of course the trigger guard cut has to hurt them. Any guesses out there?
Regards

The two pistols on the left are mine. the one on the far right is currently on the forum at an asking price of 535 and its a 38-44 outdoorsman

The far right gun is a 38-44 outdoorsman and the two one the left are the 45acp revolvers, the far left being the earlier dull finished one the middle revolver is my 1955 brighter finished example

I was talking to my gun smith (a talented S&W man) over the weekend and mentioned the Outdoorsman up for sale here. He thought the price was outrageous as do I. First, we can't imagine why anyone would do such a thing, particularly to a long barreled, target sighted N-frame. Second, the cost of correcting it and getting the welded up area to come close in any finish to the original gun would be way too high for what you would then have as a total investment.

My opinion is they are junkers (sadly ruined by who ever did the original cutting) and only suitable for re-building into shooter grade revolvers...and should be priced accordingly.

No offense intended to the OP but you did ask for opinions.

Well if you want another opinion, due to rarity of any 38/44's for sale here in Canada, it would not last 5 minutes on any gunboard, as a shooter, you can't find a model 28 for that price half the time! I would by it in a second if I can find someone to import it for $100, and still feel I got a deal, its worth it for the parts, wich are non existant here in the North. good luck Dale Z!
