Wondering what would be the going rate on a Model 60 Stainless, pinned barrel. The one I'm looking at has original wood grips that looks to be in pretty good shape. There is some of the typical discoloration on the front of the cylander. The owner said 1980 or 1981.

I'm at looking at $525.

I paid $550 for a "new, in the box" no dash M60 on Gun Broker. It is now not "new". I have several hundred rounds down range with it. It is from about 1985, and is not pinned. It is now my EDC gun.

Best,
Rick

I'd try for $450, with box and acc., maybe $475. With luck, you can get a good one for less, if the dealer needs money.

A lot depends on what he has in the gun, plus his greed factor.
You have to allow for reasonable profit, but most dealers give very little, and ask much. Pawnbrokers are even worse.

These prices were real until the current panic buying, but much of that affected more military style arms than it did revolvers.

Keep in mind that any price quotes are regional. California prices are higher, due to thier restrictive gun import laws.

Thanks for the info guys.

I've not seen too many used S&W revolvers in the local St. Louis metro area, and only 1 shop I know that has any new ones in stock.

If you see a model 60 at 300 or less, that would probably be a good buy in my state. I have watched these little fellas since they debuted at the Chiefs Association in the fall of 1965. They began as a BUG for law enforcement and have become extremely popular with everyone.

A 60- no dash 2" in 100% conditiongun blue books at $560 [$450 less $25 for 2" barrel + 30% for early[no dash] bright finish}.

Purchased mine new in 1969 for <$100.

Photobucket is actin' up or I'd post a picture.

The M-60's are great small revolvers, but I really believe that $525.00 is overpriced. I would not feel comfortable paying more than $425.00 and at $450.00, my search for one would continue.

In the end it's your decision, so do whatever will make you happy.

So, you would let a gun you really want go for a mere $25? I wouldn't, life's too short. It would cost that much or more for gas, time, energy or possible shipping cost to find another just like it. I have never let a gun go that I wanted for a measly $25-$50, besides it will be worth the asking price or more in less than a year. Just my nickels worth. :D

Many times we'll pass up a gun we want over 25 - 50 bucks and then take the wife out to dinner spending 50 and think nothing of it.The next day we have nothing. :)

Diamonback and LEO nailed it. If it's a good tight gun and you LIKE it, then buy it! Don't let $25 - $50 cause you to lose something you may regret.

I don't mind paying a fair price for a used or new firearm. I just don't want to grossly overpay for one either.

I have only recently gotten back into firearms in the past year or so. Shopping around locally I have checked 5 pawn shops, and 6 guns shops and have found 4 J-frame S&Ws for sale; 3 New 442, 642 and a 642 (worked over by the S&W ProShop), and the aforementioned Mod. 60. I have checked 3 other shops in my state and have found 1 442.

With semi-auto's I'm less picky, but with my wheel-guns. I want a S&W. I love my Mod. 65 Stainless (4"), so nothing else will do.

Wraith K I wouldn't consider that to much for that gun, I purchased this one about 8 months ago for $420. it was shipped in 1969 but I drove 80 miles to pick it up. with the population of the country today, and the magnified interest in gun ownership nowadays the value of guns are definitely going to rise. (fast too) The last new S&W revolver I purchased was a 686-3 in 1991, cost $275. and the last purchase was on Friday a 14-3 8 3/8" for $700, my motto is if you can afford it and want, buy it.

The way I look at this is a new S&W J, K or L frame revolver costs in the $700 range these days. What would I rather have, a $750 M60-14 or a new condition $550 no dash M60 made in 1984? If I had to, I would pay at least as much for the 1984 revolver as for the new one.

Best ,
Rick

+1 what he said

I'd much rather have a pinned-barel model 60 than the other later-model j-frames mentioned. I've bought two in the past 6 months-- one private party for $425 cash & and one at the LGS for $425 OTD. Sold the gun shop find for $465 a few months later-- it was in very good condition but no box or etc. $525 seems a bit high to me (esp if it's a private party sale) but not obscenely so. I'd try to dicker it down or at least get some boot thrown in-- a set of grips, a holster, or some ammo. But if you like the gun and want it, go for it-- like someone else said, what's an extra $25 (5% or so) if it's something you want?
Regarding prices that are $25 (or whatever) too high-- kinda depends on how much you want the gun. I have 2 36's & a 60, so if I can't get another one of either for my price I'll balk. But I do want to add a model 37 airweight Chief to the arsenal so I'd be more inclined to "overpay" for one of those.

Well, I found another one at the same price $525. Somehow ended up paying the $525, but ended up with 50 rounds of light wad cutters, some 50 rounds of heavier (maybe 158gr) Round Nose Flat Point, an old leather Bianchi holster. Doesn't have the factory grips, has some after market fullsized wood ones that feel pretty nice. They cover the back strap, and make the gun look more like a square butt than a round. They feel good in the hand, but I was thinking of going back to panels and a t-bar grip. They are big and probably wont hide well.

Due to schedule conflicts, I can't pick it up until this weekend. I think the wait is going to kill me. lol

Just to throw another data point out, I bought a Model 60 from the mid-70s in January (in MA, where we are used to paying more than the rest of the country). It was just short of like new and had its original grips, box, papers and tools. Price was $400.

Edit - I'm not sure that's a great data point. I think I did a quick price-check on GB before I got to the shop and concluded that it ought to price at $500 or more, so I think the prices others are reporting here are in the right range.
