Hi folks . I purchased some American Eagle ammo 5.56x45. So I am attempting to use the brass for reloading after firing in my smith and Wesson m and p15 5.56. I can de cap and size the brass but can't place a new primer in it . It has three little marks around the circumference. iIs this crimping . If so is there a tool that I can use to enlarge the primer pocket?. This is brass not a metal case.
thanks

What you describe sounds like crimped primers. I use a RCBS swaging tool to resize the primer pocket then bevel the hole with a deburring tool. It's a labor intensive process, but you only have to do it one time.

I had the same issue, even after swaging the crimp on FC brass. I wound up using a pocket uniformer to clean up the forward part of the pocket before they would seat reliably. Only did it because a buddy of mine gave me about 3 gallons of FC.

Those are the crimping marks. With 5.56 I've had good luck with the RCBS swaging kit you put on your press. A touch of Imperial sizing wax on the swag nub helps when it comes time to get the case off of it. The same kit with 7.62x51 can be an arm wrestling match getting the case off that nub.

This is tool I use.

If not for it, I'd throw them in the scrap bucket.

You will need to remove the crimps. No need to get fancy with a swadger , all's I do is just use a chamfer tool and chamfer just enough to remove the bumps. Now your primers will insert fine. I also add a slight chamfer to non crimped LC brass. The LC brass can be a real stubborn to accept primers. A slight chamfer is a big help. If you try to force a primer into a stubborn pocket I guarantee you will end up with a malformed and crushed primer.
