A magnum primer will burn longer to accommodate slower burning powders. I believe you can substitute a magnum primer for a standard with fast burning powders, but with slow powders like H110 and W296, you need to use magnum primers.

Changing components changes the firing characteristics, but if you are not working close to "limits" the difference may not matter. It depends on the load and gun.

If you are new to reloading, I respectfully suggest you load like they are listed. If you have a specific powder/load/gun combination in mind, there are many experienced loaders on this forum that could advise you.

The 2 primers aren't generally interchangable. The magnum primer is meant to ignite large charges of slow burning powders in .357 magnum loads (2400, IMR 4227, WW 296). Using them with more typical pistol powders like Bullseye will raise pressures. This is especially true if you plug one into a 9mm or similar case.

Primers marked "standard or magnum" may raise pressures, but probably not to a great degree UNLESS you're already on the ragged edge. Be very, very cautious when changing any component of your loads.

I was asking because I can't find any small pistol primers only FEDERAL small mag pistol primers. want to load.... 38spl target load 148wc bullseye powder

When working with maximum loads, ANY change in comonents requires that you back off at least 10% and work back up!!

Loading .357 magnums with AA#7 powder, using the same amount of powder, I got 16fps less with standard primers than I did with magnum primers.

I agree with the advice that you work your way up to max loads with the magnum primers though.

found primers at a local shop today... they have a new loyal customer

Hello bnewc75,

Where did you find Small Pistol Primers? I have not been able to find anyone, that has them in stock.

Thanks,

Daryl

In the past two days, I traveled over 700 miles from North Alabama to North of Lexington, KY. I stopped at the Sportsman's warehouse in Lexington. They had some LRM primers. That's it. I bought 2 cans of Trail Boss. They had no Unique, H-110, or not much of anything else.

The Gander Mt. in Bowling Green Ky, has a couple thou std SP primers. They were $4 per 100. I bought 500. They had a few other primers, but not any powder to speak of.

I bought 20,000 primers and two 8 lb jugs of pistol power BEFORE the election..also six 8 lb jugs of 4895 and 10,000 rifle primers.
