Why are the store shelves empty but the 100% + markup priced primers are readily available every day one the auction sites?

Will tensions in the Ukraine push primer productions farther behind?

Will brass and bulit productions for reloading follow suit?

Which auction sites are you finding them marked up only 100%?

The usual "big name" sites I've been able to find things at, and you have to be constantly checking, have primers closer to three times as much as the pre 2020 prices.

I really don't see what's happening overseas having a huge effect on things here, or at least no where near as much as the events domestically in the last two years that have created our current situation.

The auction site I was referring to is Gun Broker. CCI SPP's used to be .04 cents each now cost .28 cents each. That's a 600% increase in price. Crazy, I understand free enterprise and price vs demand but is demand truly that high? Even with gun sales to new gun owners. I cannot see all of them rushing out to buy so much ammunition it creates a long term shortage of primers for the big retailers like Bass Pro or Midway and others.

Until our ammo companies have government contracts to send ammo to ukraine

I find different numbers depending on the source I look at but roughly 40 million guns were sold in the US in 2020 & 2021 combined. Everyone needs ammo for their guns so figure 50 rounds per box times the number of guns sold. That would be the number of rounds if each purchaser only wanted one box. Then figure the folks that want more ammo plus the old shooters that want to stock up and purchase cases of ammo in multiple calibers. Then there are those of us that reload and buy whatever we can find at as reasonable a price as we can find for primers, powder, brass and bullets. Then figure keeping police departments stocked and military.

How many billions or rounds, primers, cases and bullets does this amount to? Huge numbers. How many new shooters? How many old shooters? There’s a huge demand. I suspect the demand will ease one day but when.

Have you watched "War Dogs" from 2016? Hate to say it, but it's how it gets done on something like this. Now if we go all in on the Ukraine problem things change pretty fast.

Reference is to Gunbroker where you can find all the primers you want. Best price I see is ~$235 for a thousand. GB has always had lots of sellers selling primers, all you want. Their prices are coming down though, average price was $300 per thousand a month ago. For what it's worth my local sporting good store had quite a few Winchester LR, SR, LP & SP for $75 a thousand with no limit last week.

Why put them on the shelf at a reasonable profit when idiots will pay the prices being paid on GB and the other auction sites ?? If you are looking for an explanation look no further.

Yes yes yes and yes, that’s it. It’s damn difficult for me to get mad at any seller with any batguano crazy price.

It’s the buyers that are dragging this out.

At my favorite gun show, no dealer can even attempt to sell a thousand primers for under a hundred or some other dealer will scoop it up and add it to his $100-$150 primers.

I don't think the Ukraine situation will affect the primer shortage. The primer shortage was caused buy new gun owners buying ammo and creating an ammo shortage which in turn created a primer shortage. Covid didn't help the situation either.

Now there's a new gun shortage so things should be getting better soon. Primers will never be 0.04 again but they might be 0.06.

I compete in cas and zsa monthly matches. Shooting a couple a month and limiting my practice I have enough primers for 3-5 years. If they come down to 50.00 or less then I’ll jump.
