Whats the deal with the shortage of WSP primers? Actually its most primers. The online stores are out and the local shops are all out?

Is it hording or lack of supply?

Don't get out much , or watch the news much ? :)

I saw on the news yesterday that there were 2.8 million NICS background checks in month of Dec. 2012. A record high number of checks.

Ammo shelves at the LGS are empty. AR mags are selling for
2 or 3 times what they cost a few months ago. Plus there are No AR or AK mags at the LGS, they are all sold out.

No AR's , No AK's ,,and very few of everything else. All Sold Out.

Powder, primers , bullets in very short supply.

Total Panic Buying Mode. :D

" The sky is falling ! ,, The sky is falling ! "

Around my parts all 9mm and 223 ammo is gone along with the components. I can still get stuff for my 44 mag, but no H335, Small primers of the rifle or pistol variety or any .224 or 9mm projectiles.

I think it has to do with the ammo manufacturers using all their resources trying to make loaded ammo and people freaking out and hoarding.

Yea, I'd imagine that the ammo makers are running there machines 24/7 and sucking up much more of the supply of the available primers that the primer machines are spitting out 24/7.

It costs a lot less to buy 10000 primers than buying 10000rds. Either way thats 10000 primers no longer availible. With the internet things change very quickly, we are only a month into this and the shortages are already old news.

I was fortunate in October to have the means (~$1K) to add to my reloading inventory. Bought 5K jacketed pistol bullets (various calibers), 8# W231, 17K primers all types (for total 50K primers). Already had lots of rifle powder, mags, and bullets.

That was a big expenditure for a retired couple, but as long as our health (and current laws) don't change dramatically, I couldn't see the money ever being wasted. Since we no longer compete, the inventory could be stretched to 3-4 years. Whew.

Well I think there is a lack of supply and hoarding going on. I wish I had the money last year to buy more, but I needed to keep the cash.

On the news they said that most stores in the last month sold 3 years worth of inventory. I think it will be awhile before things get back to "normal" and I bet the prices are higher when they do.

I just checked Midway yesterday for .32 bullets. Even .32's are nearly all sold out and "No Backorder". I'm glad I have been accumulating primers and powder as well as bullets the past year. I figure I'm good for my shooting needs for at lease a couple years, and hopefully things will be back to more normal by then. If not, things are really bad.

There is a lot of hoarding going on which happens every time gun control chatter hits the news.Stock up when it's available again and try to have few years worth of supplies set aside.Just remember to keep it replenished when supplies are abundant again. This is the 3rd or 4th shortage (at least) that I've noticed in the last 30 years.

Hoarding and panic buying. We saw the same thing about 4 years ago. The lesson: buy (when you can) in bulk and keep a significant supply of components on hand in anticipation of the next "shortage."

That is a good point but why did the manufactures not start ramping up production before election time?

They didn't see this level of panic happening or it would have been too expensive to do.Are they running 3 shifts? Anyone know?

I hope the new laws arent going to regulate quanities of reloading components that can be purchased at one time like they will more than likely do with ammo.

I checked the local inventory and we are at crisis levels. Slick Willie taught us to stock and stock pile. Getting dangerously close to the 30K red zone. Time to start shooting the .22 rimfire stock until the supply chain improves.

Someone please make the keebler elves a sandwich so they can keep working triple shifts.

I'm down to 4 or 5k.At my current rate, that's good for a few years.

Short supply ??? It's about HOARDING and stupid panic buying, that's it. Exactly the same thing happened just before the last AWB.

As for legal changes that might affect reloading components.....this stuff isn't even on the radar. There MIGHT be legal changes regarding loaded ammo....but reloading components ? HIGHLY doubtful.

Everyone needs to remember several things:

One, restrictive changes to the laws are FAR from certain....and the general public does not yet know what will be seriously proposed. Whatever is proposed will be subject to negotiation and is likely to be watered down, just as the last AWB was watered down (from it's original form). In any case, it will be MONTHS before anything substantive really happens.

Two, all of the mindless yammer regarding "executive orders" which could suddenly create major restrictions is massively overblown. The President CANNOT just pull executive orders out of his a##......and decree whatever he might like. It DOESN'T work that way. There is a very limited range of things he can do by executive order - and in any case, NOTHING which would involve creating laws where they didn't already exist (that is Congress' sole right).

Three, whatever is enacted or changed, the odds are overwhelming that there will be grandfather clauses, allowing for items already in the pipeline or already owned by individuals. It is logistically IMPOSSIBLE to impose some sort of "confiscation" scheme...or for that matter, a "turn it in or else" program. Bloody nonsense.... fomented by nattering pinheads. Besides the practical (logistical) problems with something like this, both parties KNOW that this sort of draconian measure would be political SUICIDE.

So, fourth,......everyone needs to calm the f&%$ down ! The sky is NOT falling.

Part of it is hording and part is greed. I know some people that have never owned a gun but they are buying mags and bullets. They expect that the price will rise and when they sell they will make more than their investment in the stock market. I did not have the heart to tell them that in Illinois you have to have an FFL to sell ammo :)

From what I've seen, Obie has issued more executive orders than any other President in history. I don't know where he's pulling them from, but he is doing it:).

The ammunition situation is not going to simply vanish. Get what you can, when you can, and hope for the best.
