Primers for .10

IMO primers can be had for less than $100/K today. I'm thinking in the future they will be down to $50/K and maybe less.

I would never tell anyone not to buy what they need but I wouldn't pay that price. I would shoot some .22LR ammo to hold me over if I were out of primers.

Inflation alone will keep them above $50 per thousand.

True, and I'd be happy to buy some if they were priced at $50 per thousand, based on inflation.
But when they add another $50 per thousand to the price just because that is what they can get people to pay, that's when they stop getting my money. No sale.

You can tell people exactly what retailers pay, exactly what the markup is, etc. They don't listen. It's like talking to a brick wall. The inflation conversation is just as bad. People insist on remaining stubbornly misinformed. There's nothing you can do about about willfully, stubbornly ignorant people. Gun owners in general seem to be vulnerable to these bad habits but something about this forum magnifies it. The age demographic, maybe. If you don't get enough of it in these primer price threads, you could check out such classic topics as, "9mm vs 40", "what causes barrel leading", "what's your favorite homebrew case polish", "new reloading data is underpowered", or my personal favorite, "cops can't handle recoil". In all these threads you will have people talking past each other and repeating their own half baked theories and regurgitated nonsense endlessly.

Yup, we're just a bunch of rubes. What do old guys know about anything anyway? ;)

I don’t know if the retailers can be blamed too much for the high prices.
If they get a good shipment in from their suppliers, and price them to their store customers at, say, $50 per thousand, the flippers will buy them all in a couple of days. Then sell them to their buddies and other stores for $80 per thousand and pocket the $30 difference. These guys have no investment in overhead, employees, rent, insurance, etc.
I think the retailer should get what the market will bear instead of the opportunist who basically has no skin in the game.

.22 instead of reload

During this he pandemic I paid from $55 per k to $80 per k and it was a long time between opportunities.

I have what I need for now. My next run of .38 Specials will be made with my own cast bullets so even with higher priced primers it will still be economical.

I completely agree with your suggestion to shoot .22 instead. Most of my .38s are fired out of a model 67, 14-3 or model 36.

I have a large stash of .22 LR that is still growing. My LGS has bulk pack .22 LR at decent prices so I am stocking up as much as possible instead of going $100 or more per k of primers. I have a model 18-3, 17-3, early 50s K-22, and a 2” model 34-1. Since they have the same look and feel of the .38s I can have some fun with .22s for awhile.
