I have been looking for Small Pistol Mag primers and large rifle primers. Does anyone have any idea where the end is?? What is really causing the shortage???

People buying 5k instead of 1k, people buying strictly for resale, demand for primers in finished ammo, probably more.

Early estimates I have read are 9 months when the stuff hit the fan. Which would put it to some time around August/September.

I think in a while people will see how much money they have tied up in ammo and first stop panic buying and then start to sell off some of their own supply.

I believe as long as there is talk in congress about restrictions and the libs keep pushing the issue, there will be shortages on supplys. There is still lines of people every morning in front of Gander, Cabelas, and Acadamy here. Some of the guys I work with turn right around and throw it on Armslist. Like above....as long as they keep buying it......welllll its gonna be hard to find.

My guess about another year, took a year and half for the last panic to subside most amusing part is no ammo or reloading components are presently im danger of being baned. If you need evidence of people being sheep bahhhh. Ive just stopped shooting,*uck em.

The shortage is caused by hoarding, of which I'm partly guilty. I haven't found primers since December, and bought 2K last week at my first opportunity. I'm going to shoot them, not sell them. It's either that or wait for things to improve in 2014 (assuming Congress isn't dissolved by that time).
You know this how?
I thought there were efforts in several states to make the purchase of ammo much more difficult by placing onerous taxes on it and/or requiring background checks and registration for the purchase of ammo.
Making ammo difficult/impossible/too expensive to buy is just as bad as an outright ban.
When I can find ammo/components at halfway decent prices, I intend to keep hoarding.

Hard to understand
I haven't shot my 30-06 is a long time & decided to load some up & play with it. I had powder, cases & some light weight bullets, so all I needed was 100 large rifle primers. Head to Brass Pro & none there. Head to LGS#1 & they actually have a couple bricks of LR primers. They're all taped up & marked as priced per brick. I only want 100. I saw the owner & asked him if they still sell them in lots of 100 & he says "no", only per 1000. I asked him "why" & he says because they don't have that many in stock, but that'll change when they get more in, & he walks off ?!? Does this make sense?? So I head to LGS#2 & they have LRPs, but they will only sell primers if you buy bullets, so I'm stuck having to buy bullets to get the 100 LRPs I want. This is crazy!

The entire system has gone wacky! The worst part, most of it is self-inflected...
Am I a hoarder? Or simply prepared?
Remembering the last time this happened I bought early and often so I didn't have to play in today's market. I budgeted my "discretionary funds" (aka Mad Money) and once a month I spent about $100 on powder, primers and bullets with the goal of having at least a two year cushion. All of this took place long before December 2012 and in reality my cushion is closer to four years. Looking into my crystal ball and reading about a proposed Dem "Dream Team" I'm not convinced that I have enough set back.
But I have backed off buying and spend my extra time posting about places where I see stuff and folks can find stuff. And I still get yelled at because it's not a place that will (a) sell for 2011 prices and (b) will not ship. Now if I bought it locally and put it on the web for a profit, I would be vilified for that so forget about it.
So if you buy it up and stash it when the prices are low it's okay, right? Or does that make one a "Prepper?"
And if you buy a stash now or take the capital and time of buying it, setting up an account, selling it and shipping it, you're either a hoarder or a profiteer.
But if you're ammo-less and can join in with the whiners it's okay.
I feel for the new shooter as he/she chose to enter this sport in some rough times.
But there's nothing I can do about it.
I'm going to the range.

People today are so jealous of others it's become sickening to me.
We that we prepared aren't hoarders or gougers. I've got plenty and I ain't selling.
If however I did sell, I wouldn't sell it for less than my cost of replacement.

I am partly guilty myself, and I think it is human nature to want to order a few extra boxes of ammo when you see how hard it is to find ammo. In the last few months I have built some padding, and will likely slow down, and I think others will too however, every time I see news related to attacks on the 2nd Amendment I usually end up buying more ammo, or another gun out of spite. I wish that I could find small pistol primers.

No doubt that the shortage has been created by extreme demand. The American and foreign manufacturers have not been able to keep up with that demand. I'm prepare to let the Chinese back into the market to take up the slack.

Gentlemen, I have nothing against being prepared especially since I'm one of the people who did prepare. I have enough powder/primers/components/.22 ammo and the like to last me through the next 2 shortages and maybe more. I'm not talking about buying, even in bulk, I'm talking about buying just to buy because it's there disregarding everyone else.
I'm talking about the guy who loads 2000 rounds a year, has 100,000 primers at his home and when he finds primers at extremely inflated prices orders another 100,000 primers just because. That's what causes the shortages and raises the prices to stupid numbers while emptying the shelves.
Why in the world does anyone feel the need to buy 500 rounds of .22LR ammo for between $60 and $100?? Really? And they buy all they can find, not what they need and a little more just in case, they empty the shelves.
There is a huge difference between preparing and hoarding .... Buying more than you can use on 100 years no matter what the price is hoarding, not preparing. (IMHO of course)

Here in NY there's another factor to consider. As soon as our new "Unsafe" Gun act is fully implemented, buyers will have to pass a background check just to buy a box of 50 .22 LR rounds, or any components like primers as well. So, everybody is hoarding now so they don't have to tell the govmt how much they just bought.

Pretty common knowlege that outright ammo bans are likely in only a few states at best, my point is your ammo problem is self inflicted and I have little sympathy for that.IMO an outright ban is worse than making it difficult to purchase. Being I can cast and load all I need feel free to hoard away.

I just on americanspecialityammo.com and they have small pistol primers in stock, and large rifle primers, for $38 a brick at least when I looked just now. Try them.

To me the $38 is outrageous. But if I needed them, I'd just pay up and swallow my pride. How much do you need them?

Fear is driving this for the most part. With all the antigun talk, states looking for any possible way to increase revenues to feed their parasitic employees & the govt printing $40-$80B a month in US Monoploy $$, primers & ammo are only going to go up in price or become so heavily regulated, NY, NJ, etc lic to buy BS, buying now is a good idea. Buying all you can afford now is a better idea. In 5yrs the primers you buy today for $30 will be $50/K. You'll feel like a genious.
I expect it to continue thru the 2014 elections. If the libertarians & conservatives pull their collective heads out of their azz & get behind solid Rep candidates, maybe we can relax for awhile.

It has been quite awhile since I have paid $8 a brick for primers. It has to be before the 1990's? primer shortage. Since that time $18-20 a brick has been normal. Now, double that. This thread was started asking where to buy primers, these people seem to have some. At least not at the $120 for a brick of 22's kind of prices. The trouble with buying over the internet is that you have to pay haz-mat shipping prices, typically $27.50 per order. It is no wonder that there is a shortage, everyone buying is buying to max. there shipping costs, so might as well by xxx of them and xxx lbs of powder for the same shipping costs.
