I was a bit put of when my friend shelled out over 500 bucks for a grade 1 Sig 228 and found it came with a pro mag...the salesman offered me a Mec Gar for an additional 39 bucks....I told him no thanks, we'll find them on line, which he did for 20 bucks a piece...still, I was a bit teed off and e-mailed the store...

"I am a longtime customer and always recommend your shop to friends. Recently, I brought in a friend who bought a brand new P220 Equinox. Yesterday, I brought a friend in and he purchased a police turn in P228. Your salesman was very personable and knowledgeable and the whole transaction was a pleasant experience...but I don't think it's right to furnish a factory gun with a non-factory magazine. My friend is buying this gun for home defense and for him to rely on a promag, which are known to be substandard magazines, is unacceptable. The gun should come with the a Sig (Mec Gar) magazine. He shouldn't have to spend another 39.99 to have peace of mind."

Now I'm not sure if they are switching them out or the importer is....either way, it is dishonest..no way SIG is shipping them from Germany with pro mags.

Anyway...when we picked up the gun, there was a band new mec gar in the gun...:)

I agree, the gun should have come with a factory magazine. Back during the dark days of the AWB, I bought a 229 9mm with a 10 round magazine. I went looking for 13 rounders and at that time they were $100 or more. On the Sig forum, I learned that you could buy Pro-Mags and use the tubes, but replace the springs and followers. I bought a couple and found that it worked. Over the years I have bought a bunch of Pro-Mags and replaced just the springs. I have never had a problem in many thousand rounds. I went to a shooting school a couple of years ago and fired over 2k rounds in 3 days without a single failure.

Here is the Sig and the magazines that I took. I took my factory mags but didn't use them as I didn't want to drop them in the dirt.

You're in Cali, if the purchaser was non LE, then the full cap mag that would have likely shipped with the gun would have been pulled and a 10rd mag needed. Since most of the rest of the country has non gimped guns, they might have used whatever they had handy to make the switch.

MecGar mags sold under their own label are made to slightly different specs than the mags they made to sell under the Sig factory label.

Individual Promag products often work, they simply have a higher failure rate. I used their nickel 13rd mags in my MKIII BHP during the ban and never had a problem. The 12rd HK USP .45 mags that they sold me also worked fine.
