A friend of mine recently lost a a parent who was a World War II veteran. The flag that draped the coffin is nicely displayed in their house in a triangular glass faced wooden display case on the mantlepiece.

What is considered a proper display of a relative's Purple Heart?

I've seen the medals displayed in a separate display box
directly under the flag display. I don't know if it's acceptable
to place the medal in with the flag, as in, on top of the flag.
That might be viewed as putting the individual before the
flag. I doubt if the individual thought that way when he put
on the uniform. I'm sorry he has passed on. TACC1

Perhaps your local VFW or other veterans organization could provide guidance. This has probably come up before.

The flag honoring a departed Veteran should remain folded as presented to the family and may be displayed in a appropriate case.

Medals, photos and other memoriabila may be displayed separtely.

You should have received Page 3, of VA Form 21-2008 on the care and use of the burial flag.

A very nice display case that I found for you.

My sincere condolences to his family.

A nice addition to the purple heart display (and any other medals he received), would be his dog tags; they would positively identify the recipient of the awards. I have seen a shadow box with medals and dog tags, and they definitely added to the display. Of course, the dog tags may not be available.
