What size and what kind of punches do I need to change out the front sights on a 29-6 Classic and a 686-6. the 29-6 has a regular pin and the 686 has a roll pin.

Thanks for your help.

Brownell's (and probably other sources) will sell you both standard pin and roll pin punches. They would like to sell you starter punches as well to minimize your chance of slipping and marring the finish. I think the front sight pins are 1/16 inch, but somewhere I saw a reference to needing a .05-in (1/20 inch) punch to get them out. I'm hoping someone will address this question for my benefit as well as yours.

I seem to remember there is directionality to these sight-retention pins. If I recall correctly, with the muzzle pointing away from you and the barrel at the top, you drive them in from the right and drive them out from the left. If I got this wrong, somebody PLEASE tell me soon, as I have a set of punches on their way to me from Brownell's.

From my shopping cart list:

230-100-000 ROLL PIN PUNCH KIT
354-100-000 PS-8 GRACE BRASS PUNCH SET
354-000-006 #BSP-4 BRASS STARTER PUNCH SET 4-PC

Looks like I neglected to order the roll pin starter punch set. I'll add that to the next order. I'm trying to build a basic set of gunsmithing tools.

You don't have to order full sets. If you know you want a punch of a specific size, you can order that by itself.

my 625 used a drill bit .046 think its a .050 pin mines the removeable sight and is spring loaded had a roll of tape on the beanch and pushed [not real hard] so the sight moved to the grips and tap the pin right out ..good luck joe

Regular punches will flatten and disfigure the rounded end pins on S&W revolvers.I'd recommend you get "cup tip punches".Brownells has them.

If your 29-6 Classic is the one with the full underlug and the front sight base has a hole in the front then it is the quick change blade. You don't remove the pin, just slide the sight to the rear, life it up at the front and take it out. There's a spring loaded plunger in the rear of the base that holds the sight snug against the cross pin.

Thanks Joni, that information is very helpful.

Thank you for pointing those out. I completely overlooked them, and they are clearly what I need.
