PURCHASE A SHIELD

Clear example of spending too much time on the forums... Believe me, when people are happy with a product, they generally wont be online talking about it as much as those who do experience a issue and then search online for a answer...I think this is true for all consumer products.
This may give the impression of a widespread "issue", which there is not...

The M&P shield is a very well made & reliable carry gun. Don't overthink it, if you like it, like how it feels, then buy it with confidence, you won't regret it...

I don't care of reports that certain guns works 100% IT HAS TO, I like to know of problems so I stay away from those guns, for my safety and others.

"Google your health symptoms is a sure way to convince yourself that you're dying".... Common sence says that it doesnt necessarily mean that it's true.

If you really want hardcore evidence of safety problems then try googling Taurus pistol recall.... But I'll be damned if you find masses of unhappy M&P shield owners.

If shopping for a new firearm, it IS good to research BEFORE buying and search out problem/issue threads, in order to ascertain whether the problems are...
(first) real, perceived, or just plain rants,
(second) something that can be easily fixed (or avoided) by reading the threads,
(third) something that I recognize MIGHT happen but can deal with (thanks to these threads), or
(fourth) something that I'll simply 'Wait And See' and choose not to buy at this time (ie: the infamous XD-S 'Full Auto'/Unintentional Triple-Tap issue a few Yrs back).

The back of the guide rod on the factory Sheild guide rod is flimsier than the Full Size or Compact and bending it from improper installation is understandable being that it is not captive in the barrel for instance like a Sig SP2022. It seems unlikely that the plate was bent/broken from the factory and more likely damage is from not-so-careful installation. Regardless, the sub $10 part ought to be more readily available and S&W should make longer runs of typical spare parts for their hottest selling guns, but that is a business decision on the part of their managers and bean counters.

If you are "gun shy" about spare parts availability, then get another gun. I was probably over cautious when I decided on a Shield 9 instead of a Shield 40 even though I've shot 10's of thousands of 40 through my M&P 40 Full Size but a Shield in 40 just made me a little more nervous in thinking that the Shield 40 may be a little less tolerant to overloads than the Shield 9 so that was my choice.

In the end, it's your choice.
